Anyone here shooting bears?

I had a recent Polar Bear chance encounter...

in Coney Island...Thank god for their heavy fur keeping them warm, it was cold and quite windy that day!

But yeah, after Herzog's movie I'm not sure I want to get close to (insert heavy German accent)"the monumental indifference of nature"

Yeah, I don't buy that advice either... I think it's meant to have the "most chance of success" given the alternatives; you can't outrun them, killing them won't be easy either short of a grenade launcher and you sure as hell won't intimidate them by making noise. I think if you're on a polar bear's bad side, it's just easier to bend over and kiss your ass goodbye. 😉

You can outrun a Polar bear, it's the brown/Grizzly that you cannot outrun.

For a Polar bear, you just need to keep walk faster than it does. They are so well insulated that they can overheat on land.

We camped across Canada this summer and ended up with bears in a few of the camp grounds.

This little fella below was first heard at the side of the road with momma across the other side. I made sure not to put our car btwn the two.

I would give all bears due respect, even the common black bear which has been known to also kill people. The killing of a person by a black is rare though and they usually prefer to go the opposite way given the chance. All animals are extremely protective of their young as other have said but bears in general have the power to really do so. Bears, and I will leave Polar bears out as I have no experience with them, are very fast in the short run. They are amazing sprinters. I got to see two young Grizzlies jump an Elk at Yellowstone and they were on its heels with the Elk flat out. The Elk made it OK but only just. No, I don't think you could outrun one.
