I love the 85 focal length and I love the Sonnar design. I would really love to have the two of them together. I know there are Jupiters in the 85 Sonnar. Is there anything else?

Any info on 85mm Sonnars is appreciated. I would like to start learning about them and need some good starting point.

Thanks!

I had the Zeiss Opton in Contax RF mount. Used it on film, RD1 and M8 with an Amedeo adapter.
Here is a Flickr set of my early experiences with the lens including a Bokeh comparison (WO, f4, f8)

It was a fabulous lens. I let all my Opton lenses go with the adapter a couple years ago. Still regret that sale.

The Nikkor ltm 85mm is a fine sonnar as well. There is still something about that Zeiss lens I could never quite find in the Nikkor output.

In addition to what was already mentioned, not exactly 85mm, but close:

LTM:

1 - Nikkor 105/2.5 LTM
2 - Several Komura lenses; I have an 80/1.8 which I believe is an Ernostar (not a Sonnar, but closely related)

M:

3 - M-Hexanon 90/2.8 (Ernostar)
4 - M-converted G-Contax 90/2.8 - basically identical design to 3.
5 - Summicron 90/2 v3 (also an Ernostar)

Funnily enough, in case you wonder, the expensive 85/2 ZM Sonnar is not a Sonnar design.

Well that's not good. I want the Sonnar design. I love it's signature.

Me too.

All Sonnars/Ernostars, and since taking the above photo, I've added some 😱

If you are okay with a bit longer lens, I highly recommend the nikkor 105mm 2.5. I'd say it is one of the best lenses I have alongside summicron DR.

I would like to keep my lens as short as possible. Easier to carry around and keep that one lens on the body this way. That's what I'm hoping for. I have a Canon 135 f/4 but it's longer than I care for when keeping it on all the time. The Jupiter 9's look about right.

you should be careful if you're going for the J-9. focus on mine was way off when not using it on russian cameras and i read that this is a common problem with this lens because the threads of zorki/fed and leica are not 100% compatible (which often doesn't show when using wider lenses).

I've read about those problems also. The one i'm getting has been used on an M6 with no problems so it may be a leter model or it was fixed in the past to work with M-bodies. It will be going on my M3 and that will become my new portrait camera, and the IIIc will move up to Street Camera. If i find any problems with the lens i'll just have it adjusted. It's a common thing so no worries.
