Anyone shoot HP5+ at 200-250?

I've had great results from Tri-X at 250 (excellent tonality and grain) but haven't heard much about pulled HP5+ (200 or 250). Any thoughts?

Also, development times in HC-110 would be really appreciated (there's nothing on the massive dev chart for ISO below 400). Thanks!

I have not used HC-110, but I find that HP5 rates pretty similarly to TXT in D76 for me - about 250-320 depending on metering methods. Rodinal is 250 just about all the time, and Perceptol is 200.

HP5 has pretty good tonality, relatively low contrast, and finer grain than TXT (well, "creamier" maybe is better word) when you give it just a modest overexposure.

That's the way I currently use HP5+, to compensate the underdevelopment I need for the filmscanner...

It's only one or two films that I exposed this way and I'm still looking for optimal processing (now rodinal 1+50, approx. 8 minutes (don't have my notes here).

One would think that pulling and the moderate rodinal dilution would provide very fine grain, but my first results seem to point the other way... But actually I didn't experiment enough yet to conclude.

All the time, 6mins in stock ID11 @ 20C, I use the same for 400TX. This gives negs which print at G2-3 on my Opemus 6/Meograde enlarger depending on shooting conditions. HP5 and Rodinal is IMO to be avoided, but tastes vary.

I shoot HP5 EI200 and develop in D76 1:3 for 14min at 68 deg. It's an excellent film - excellent shadow detail and pushes and pulls nicely.

Ben: I haven't shot it in years, so don't have fresh experience. But I did rate it at 200; my time in HC-110 was about the same as TX similarly rated; Dilution H @ about 9 minutes, IIRC.

If you want to try the Rodinal route, I would recommend 1:100, with a time of about 20 minutes (maybe a bit less) as a starting point.

They do not list pull times for it. A month ago I did a roll at 200 and reduced development the usual 20% for one stop over. Scanned and printed perfectly.

D76 was the usual developer. Original time came off Ilford`s website.

Hey Ben. I rate Hp5+ as 200-250 iso. I did a test by shooting the same shot. One at 400 and the next frame at 200. I developed them in HC-110 (dilution B) for 5 minutes. The one shot at 200-250 looked better to me.

I don't know where those pictures went but I'm sure you can easily do a similar test. Good luck with it. 🙂
