just curious if anyone is shooting using the 1:1 format on the x's?

been thinking of trying it out for a few days...

I'm guessing, it's basically an in-camera crop (unlike the upper end Lumix cameras where the sensor is larger than stated, so changing a aspect ratios preserves the lens field of view- though not in1:1 which is a crop).
I know circular sensors is too much to ask for, but why can't manufacturers make square sensors to make the most of the image circle?

capt...it's a crop, yes.

I shoot the largest digital format the camera supports and crop to 1:1 in Lightroom if appropriate.

I rarely shoot square.. But I will shoot a 3:2 picture while composing it for sq for cropping latter.

I don't have a Fuji camera, but I've been making square format photos with every camera I've used since time immemorial.

I like square format. I learned a lot of photography with a Rolleiflex TLR early in my life and have always loved the look of square format photographs since.

I really like the square format, don't want to crop afterwards, but I like to make a square composition in the OVF of the X-Pro1. Although the framelines are very, very conservative, it is great fun walking around with the X-Pro1 and either the 18 or 35mm lens and create a square vision.
In the OVF you have a lot of space to move around whilst making the composition.
We do throw away at least 5 MP in the process, but what the heck.

Did I understand correctly that also the OVF framelines indicate the format in which you shoot? I assume there is at least 1:1, 4:3, and 16:9 in addition to native format.

I frame square regardless of what format the camera is, and set Lightroom to automatically crop to the square. Don't need to change what the camera captures at all ... and there are those times when what the camera has captured ALSO works as a rectangular proportion image, so I might as well have all the data at my disposal. Could never see telling the camera to chop away any of the data in the raw files ... !

Me, I purchased this camera only for this format, I'm always dreamed about "pocket Hasselblad"!

I use it on occassion, I love 6x6, so I often compose for square.

Nope. I tend to like RAW and the 1:1 option is jpeg.

I love shooting 1:1 on digital cameras. Actually, it is one of those features I look for, along with a in-firmware intervalometer (this should be on every camera, seriously, how many lines of code and how much coding time can it actually take?) Olympus has my favorite implementation of it, which gives you a 1:1 RAW and JPEG. When I briefly had my xe-1, which I liked but wasn't a keeper for me, I did try the 1:1 mode and the JPEG only thing didn't bother me...JPEG engine is good, RAW support still a bit weak.

I think I shot an entire 10 day drip with an Oly E-P1 in square format. Had a blast.

I never worried about "wasting pixels" or "cropping". For me it was about the interface...the ability to frame and preview the shot in square format. I also learned a lot about photography on a TLR, old Flexaret VII, and square is a great way to see the world. This advantage trumps any of the negatives, for me. I find it very hard to see a rectangular frame and imagine how I might crop it later in square.
