Anyone tried spring gate rings?

Hi,

I'm looking into options for quick dis-/attachment of a camera strap from the lugs, that don't leave anything hanging when it's off.

The Leica strap #14312 is the best option so far after regular split key rings, but it's too slow.

Did anyone try spring gate key rings for neck/wrist strap attachment? Are they strong enough?

Here's an example from a website that I have no relation to. I would insert an image but on the iPad I don't know how it's done.

The description says they are "decorative" in strength. I would not use them to hold a camera on a strap.

I'm thinking about the smallest one, but yes, could be. And although the gate is locked inside the ring, it doesn't keep the ring from bending.

Could this be another Kickstarter project? Tiny, secure spring gate strap lug rings. Perhaps they could come with black paint on top of that antique brass? 🙄 😛

I agree. If the "gate" and the ring had a hook interface much like that of a good caribiner they could be strong enough. Without such a hook they would bend open too easily to true unless made with extremely hard material.

I haven't tried these, but I handled them in the store. I considered the smallest for the same purpose. They looked like they'd work, but the idea made me paranoid, and I have no need to switch them quickly anyway...

i have a black leather strap from leicatime with clips, and ordered a separate clip for my wrist strap. very practical to change from neck to wrist to no strap (tripod) without threading rings through hoops.

you'll have to go through the leicatime strap section to find the clip option, and the results of luigi's tests with various weights.

i've had no issues with the clip, and will continue to use them until they start to wear or loosen up.

Unless the gate can be secured in some way it's pretty much guaranteed the latch will open and work it's way off the strap or lug.

Yeah, I had my eyes on those too but they seem a bit big. I'm picky 🙂

Without wishing to be negative, how often do you need to do this, and why? Yes, removing split rings is tedious, but you're still looking at only a couple of minutes, and the camera works just as well on a tripod with the strap attached (or with 'tails' from a strap with QD click-fasteners) as hand-held.

I'm not saying there's no need to do it: I'm just wondering whether there's something I haven't thought of, about how often you need to do it.

You will probably have to leave rings in the camera eyelets to make it work.

I'm not saying there's no need to do it: I'm just wondering whether there's something I haven't thought of, about how often you need to do it.

Good point. I agree that this is nitpicking on my behalf, but isn't RFF full of these weird subjects? 😉 I never liked neck straps and wrist straps are also annoying when the camera is in the bag. I see the use for a wrist strap if I am out for hours with just one camera and lens, no bag. I see the use for a neck strap when I shoot with a TLR on tripod and take additional photos with a 135 camera. I need my hands free for moving the tripod about, but I don't want to hassle with the other camera in and out of the bag all the time.

I just want to reduce the annoying bits as much as possible. I guess I have weak nerves 😀
