Anyone use a 21mm without external viewfinder?

I use a 28 & 35 w/o accessory finder on sqinty little Barnacks & Zorki.1s. I just take a quick side-to-side glance through the VF to get a decent idea of framing. It gets easier, more accurate, with practice.

OP. Have you ever used an external finder? I ask because, before I used one, I thought that it would be cumbersome. In actual use, I find it quite the opposite , generally a pleasure to use.

Well, my only experience with an external finder is with my e-p2. I love having a viewfinder, but I started hating the fact that it wasn't built into the camera. I always had to keep attaching it when I pull my camera out and it makes the camera bigger. Maybe it would be different with my Leica, but I decided that I only want cameras with built in finders.

Sure ... just focus and then imagine the extra FoV when framing. I have the 21 finder for use with the M4-2 and M9, but have often just gone shooting without it. Takes a few minutes to understand what the lens sees, then it's a piece of cake. (A little harder with a film camera, of course.)

An ultrawide like 21 on FF is a pretty broad shotgun anyway. Frame loose. ;-)

If you are shooting digital, make a shot and see what you have, frame accordingly. Film is another matter. Dedicated test shots have to be made and kept as a reference.

I have a Zeiss viewfinder for my 21, a Kodak finder, two Voigtlanders, and two Canons at different widths.

A lot depends on the camera, my III's behave differently than my M's. My 25mm Voigtlander is fine on the IIIf but the 40mm cuts off the top of the subject's head. All the other have varying degrees of capturing too much of the left side of the frame. The old Canons aim pretty true on the IIIf.

I paid $300 for my Zeiss 21mm finder and have yet to use it!
Speed is sometimes everything! I recently shot 40 pictures with the 21mm 4.5 Zeiss and the M Mono, and only 3 were not framed well. By 'well' I mean no cropping necessary.

Here are two from the shoot:

I have the EVF2 for my Leica M240; It doesn't exactly cause my pulse to race, in spite of the fact that many love the EVF. Nonetheless, it is good to have at hand from time to time.

If I am going to shoot with my 21/3.4 Super Elmar and I want exact framing, I will use the EVF. My preference is to use the camera's viewfinder and guesstimate my framing, though.
