I have had a G1 since the beginning of the year and, despite my initial reservations, I have warmed up to it. I think I am getting more tolerant of "not quite perfect" as my age advances - so things like the EVF delay, crop, and high ISO noise are merely something to mindful rather than a deal breaker.

Anyway, I have always had a nice camcorder, but find myself reluctant to lug it around with a still camera, so I decided to go with convergence with the GH1 and sell the G1. The video can be incredible, but I suspect I am in for quite a learning curve.

Are there any forum members with one who can share some experiences and advice on things like fast, large, economical SDHC cards, and editing solutions (probably iMac, but I have PCs too)? And of course, any video to share (or photos)?

Here is one of the videos that help sell me on the possibilities - looks like a competent amateur shot it. http://www.vimeo.com/5179973

I don't know much about the GH1, but the Olympus EP-1 will stop recording after about 7mins. 7mins at 1080i is little over 1GB of video. You can quickly start recording again, but then the SD card will get super hot. Other than that, the videos turn out great. The audio is surprisingly good too. Unfortunately, no Tarkovsky-esque 30min continuous shots. I use a Kingston SDHC 16GB card, and it works just fine. As far video and audio editing software, I prefer Steinberg Nuendo on the PC over Protools.

Thanks,

From the information I have gathered, the GH1 will shoot video till you fill the card, or the battery runs out. I think I can use a good Class IV SDHC Card, so I'll be searching for a couple this weekend (my GH1 should arrive on Tuesday).

From what I've gathered on the net, the GH1 is the most complete still/video hybrid out there. Many people who use it as a video camera are amazed by it.

This website has a pretty good review & comparison with real video cameras, it's sort of like the dpreview of video camera's

Basically, the GH1 is about as close to HD video quality you can get in a still camera, with all the advantages a bigger sensor entails (real DOF effects, special effect lenses etc). I'd get one myself but it's a bit too $$$$.

Who did you get the GH1 from? Supply has been pretty thin at US retailers.

Berger Bros Camera, they had them last night. I believe a few retailers got them yesterday - Amazon, Onecall, etc. I ordered from Berger Thursday when they were the only ones with them - if I had waited, I probably could have saved a little through Bing cashback at some retailer.

A lot of people are now waiting for the new Canon 7D, but I think I'll stick w/m4/3s for now.
