I have a 4/3 adapter but when I mount it to the camera there is no picture - the screen is totally black except for the menu items around the edges even when aimed at a light source. When I pull the adapter off, the screen lights up. The microscope stage is well illuminated with a ring lite.

Any thoughts?

I have a Pen F on my field microscope. There is no "shoot without lens" selection in Olympus menus. If the screen and viewfinder are black then the lens/adapter has not been detected. Detection is made by the little pin in the camera body fitting into a matching hole in the lens/adapter.

With no lens on the camera you should see a bright but very blurry image on the screen or in the viewfinder. Try pressing the pin with your finger and the screen/viewfinder should go black.

Some lenses or adapters have tight or misaligned holes or possibly you mounted the lens while holding down the dismount button, which allows the lens to rotate too far and block the pin.

Try rotating the lens back and forth clockwise and counter-clockwise a little while not touching the dismount button. The pin may click into the hole in the adapter. If that doesn't work, check if the hole in the adapter is too small or not deep enough to allow the adapter to be detected.

Good luck.

I had similar issues with my Pen F and an e bay adapter. Mine was a Leica Thread Mount to Pen fitting, to mount the Pen on a telescope, but a similar usage as you.

Marty has it in one. In my case it redrilled the hole in the adapter to allow the pin to fit, and it works like a charm now.

Gary.
