tenba messenger DNA bags…i have been looking at these on the net and they seem pretty nice…good looking and practical.

i'm curious if anyone out there is using one and what you think of it.

Looks very interesting. Nice step up in protection compared to the Timbuk2. From their site it looks like the good folks working on designs these days. My oldest has my favorite Tenba from some years back.

Perhaps they (the folks who own them) are all at work today.

Bueller......Bueller.....?????

Had a look at one recently when buying a messenger.

Looked very well made like the rest of their gear.

...love the messenger bag!

not a very popular bag it would seem...

I already have the Tenba Small messenger and a Timbuk2, so I haven't bought one of these. I was thinking of selling the older Tenba and getting the newer DNA in it's place. If I was buying a laptop/camera bag today it would be on my short list.

Thanks for showing. Looks like my next bag. Could kick the BBBE out of the house? But what size? What do you think Joe, the DNA 8 for small Fuji X gear plus an iPad mini?

could be…i have not seen them in person myself but i like the looks of them on the web.
my bbb-e has been retired along with the shibata and even the ona bowery…i might sell the first 2 but am keeping the bowery for one camera days.

I ordered a DNA 8 today. :)
But its still not available here in Germany.
Will report when it drops in.

no dna bags in edmonton to be seen…the one place that carries tenba has the dna as a special order product!
i did get to see the tenba messenger, small, and it's as big as the domke 802…so not so small.
i think my best bet is a domke 803 or the tenba messenger mini. the 802 just feels so big on my shoulder...

So, here it is. The Tenba DNA 8.

After using the bag for two days I sold my BBB-E.

The bag is with its 1.3 lbs or 600 grams very light. Building is extrem good. Better sewing and no sharp velcro corners as the BBB-E has.
Padding is much more efficient and bigger. With the BB-E I had dings on lens hoods when dropping the bag because of the minimal padding. I understand thats the concept of the BBB-E, but for me it doesn't worked.

This is my stuff for the daily run.

Everything fits perfect in the bag. Very nice the special place for the iPad mini. Its well padded.

The camera is on top. So the Quick Access zipper on top allows you to trap the camera at once without opening the flap . Very cool!

In the basement my Bokina macro is housing.
In the left corner on top the XF 18 and down under the Olympus 24mm f 2.8 or the Samyang 12mm F2,0, whats just in the mail.

So, for my equipment the bag fits perfect. Some might want a bigger bag for zooms or so and so should have a look on the DNA 11 or 15.

looks very nice and bigger than i thought (for it being the smaller sized dna 8)…i wish i could see one up close and personal…it's an attractive bag, i like the look of the material it is made of.

(i also really like the look of that wood table the bag is sitting on)
thanks for the pics!

Your welcome. :)
Tell the table my wife.
She wants a new one...
Who wants a new table when you can buy lenses...

Had a chance to look at one locally and I agree it is a very nice bag for a smaller kit. Two things I really liked are the light weight and top zipper to access your gear without opening the flap. Checks a lot of boxes for a small bag imho.

The DNA series looks great! I'm tempted by the DNA 8 or 11.

I've had a Tenba Messenger Mini for several years, it's my go-to bag for carrying a largish kit of gear. Even though it's "mini," it carries a medium-large DSLR sized camera (Olympus E-5) and four-five lenses easily, as well as a 13" laptop. One of the best working bags I've ever owned.

A DNA 8 might be just right for my current, smaller kit. :)

where did you find one in town?
i have looked but never found one...

The DNA 8 arrived this evening.

First impressions:

- It's small and light. Not too small, just small.

- The strap is nowhere near as good as the one on the Tenba Messenger Mini, but then the DNA 8 is a lot smaller, not really designed to carry as much.

- It fits all the stuff I was intending to put into it. I got it primarily to fit the Leica X and its accessories, and the iPad mini, which all fit nicely. In a pinch, I can carry the Voigtländer Perkeo II and a few rolls of film, or the M4-2 with one lens and a few rolls of film, too.

- Good pockets, typical for Tenba bags, and the direct access zipper works well (lets you get your camera in and out without having to open the flap).

- Speaking of which, the mag-snap latches are very nice and obviate the need for the somewhat heavy velcro. I'll shave down the velcro...

- The top mounted handle is great.

- Brand new, it's a little bit stiff. I expect it will soften up with a bit of use. Of course, being a snug fit for the iPad mini, it won't ever be floppy with the tablet inside.

I replaced the strap with one of my spare Domke straps, which is longer and made of cloth with rubber antislip strips. More comfortable and allows the bag to hang at the right point.

Only going out for a couple day's walk with it will let me know for sure, but I think this is a pretty good bag for what I had in mind. Certainly better than the last two bags I tried and returned within half an hour. It's sort of a modernized Domke F5XB with just enough more room to fit the iPad mini.

Second impressions of DNA 8:

Excellent bag. Great size for a minimal kit, both in terms of capacity and of overall sizing*. I'm carrying it today with the Leica X kit and iPad mini in it, using about 2/3 of the capacity very sloppily.

Even with the short time I've used it so far, the bag has relaxed a bit and become quite comfortable to wear.

The strap that came with the DNA 8 is ok, but not as nice as the Domke strap I put on it. I think, however, I'll order an OP/TECH USA S.O.S. Strap to try out. (I'm looking for alternative straps for the Think Tank Photo "Mirrorless Mover 30i" bags as well; love those bags for a multi-lens kit, but the strap is definitely second rate once the bag gets over the 3-4lb mark.)

Pleased. :)

* Joe, the exterior size is very close to the Domke F5XB, just about an inch little taller.

It's nice to read the comments on the DNA bag in this thread. The DNA 8 really was born out of frustration because we started shooting Sony and Fuji mirrorless in the office, and not only was there no Tenba bag that was sized right for mirrorless, but we couldn't even find another brand that was making a professional-grade mirrorless bag, so we built the DNA 8. As some have pointed out, we went with a minimalist strap on the bag because even when it's fully loaded, the weight was reasonable, and we thought a larger strap pad would be too bulky. But Tenba does offer a new removable 1.5" strap pad in our Tenba Tools collection that will start shipping in two weeks that can be added if necessary.

I'm happy to answer any questions that anyone has, but the reviews above are wonderfully detailed and probably have all the necessary information.

Thanks for the comments.

Peter
