Apo Summicron 35mm

Realistically speaking, if you are not using photography as a professional (for income), spending $8000 for one lens with the goal to get the perfect lens may be an overkill, in my humble opinion.
In theory, it makes sense to get what Cal has gotten, and to use such amazingly perfect lenses, but as a hobby, it would be too costly for most people.

The Summicron 35/2 Type 1, The Summaron 35/2.8 and the Summicron Replica - to me - are perfect lenses.

I own two of these lenses, Teddy. I missed getting the Summaron.

Uber sharp, uber corrected is nice, but I’m happy with the less ‘perfect’ 35 mm lenses available from Leica and others. If I were to indulge in one of Leica’s newer lenses, I’d go for the slow and flawed Summaron 28mm f5.6 lens.

Until you’ve tried ‘perfect’, all the chatter is speculation. Shoot a 50 APO (Leica or CV) and then we can talk.

The 28 Summaron did seem very compelling but the fast and imperfect 28 Summilux was even more interesting as a 2nd hand alternative. Double the price of the Portuguese version but 4 stops faster.

I am happy with my M10M and expect to use it for 10 years before upgrading to whichever Monochrome available then. When the time comes I am sure the sensor resolution will be much higher than what is available now. While I shoot mostly with a Pre-FLE 35mm Summilux ASPH I can see my 28mm Summilux ASPH looks better mated to a modern sensor. Very subjective I know. Since 35mm is my most used focal length it is just logical to future proof my gear even if that means selling off some classic lenses. No doubt I’ll buy one eventually.

Paying it forward into a future proofed lens that is good for a few generations is one way to make things cost effective.

A Leica representitive told me in conversation that the lens for the Leica "Q" is already designed to be "future-proofed to an 80 MP sensor.

Separately in the SL forums they say the "L" glass is future proofed to a 120 MP sensor.

I would suspect that the new APO 35 Cron-M would also be good to a 120 MP sensor.

If we want to think/see more forward look at how Leica developed the processor and menu for the "S," then it trickled into the SL, and them finally into the "M."

For film though I still love old glass and especially old glass that is single coated. I would not discount the value of old lenses because as long as film is around they will remain great.

Now about my point: Its about what I like and about what I prefer for my style of shooting, not yours or anyone else's. Like I said, the summaron 28mm f5.6 is the lens that interests me, not the 28 lux. Or the 35mm APO cron.

Some people will go out and get a fast car they don't need but are drawn to because they want the experience. Life is unpredictable and at some point, especially in these abnormal times, indulgence is a balm for sanity.

BTW, buying full retail isn't invariable. Have a couple of really cool pieces I was able to acquire for far less, like the 50 APO. Patience and ingenuity.
