APX 100 - HC-110 or Rodinal

Hi!
I got a few rolls of APX 100 here waiting to be developed. I have used only HC-110 in the past, also on APX100 (B, 7min), with good results.
Now the mentioned rolls contain photos that are very important, (likely printed and published). Some have suggested to use the classic combination APX and Rodinal 1+50, but I am reluctant to use that stuff.

What advantages can I really expect from Rodinal over HC-110? Sharpeness and grain are not so important, I really need tonal and dynamic range; preservation of details in the highlights are also more important than shadows (photos taken in Tien Shan - mountains, ice/snow, dark rock, clouds, high contrasts, etc).

If you already have nailed the development with HC 110, just do it the same way if the shots are important. Rodinal works great with APX 100, but you have to dial in exposure and dev time/dilution/agitation, so I would not do an experiment on critical rolls.

I agree with this too...maybe your next roll you could try Rodinal...
I have some APX 100 and have developed it in Rodinal and it came out very nice...I don't remember the details, I may have referred to the Big Chart for a starting point...

APX 100 / Retro 100 10:00 minutes in Rodinal 1+50.
First minute continuous agitation , then every 30S 1x slowly.

But you have to dial in again for this new combo. So i agree not changing too quickly.

However the combination Rodinal - APX 100 is very good. Tight grain and high sharpness/acutance.

Hi Peter,

I give APX100 a lot of light (Incident @25, yellow filter) and develop it in Rodinal 1+50 whithout losing detail in the highlights... But of course it all requires precise exposure both for sunny scenes and for overcast/shadows... Here's a previously posted example of APX100/Rodinal 1+50 for contrast control on harsh light, yet with real sunny mood:

You should use the developer you know the most... But APX/Rodinal are a blessing!

That's a great advice from Thomas... Only you know how you meter and expose, so with another roll of APX100 (cut in two) and developed at two different times with Rodinal 1+50, you'll know how it works and if you like it...

I like the way Juan exposed the Rollei Retro@25 with a yellow filter in direct sunlight (incident metering, I must make a note on that).
