are folders really that bad?

You might as well ask this question of field view cameras, such as the Speed Graphics, Deardorffs, Gandolfi, etc., as they are also folders, and when it comes to lens to film, film planes, scale does not matter, IMO.

The Iskra I had was very good, the Super Ikonta I have now, in need of a CLA for the rangefinder/focus/timer errors, locks up tight and, to my eye, in perfect parallels, and older Kodak folders also look sound, as does my beat-up/striped pre-Aniv. Speed Graphic.

Misadventures anywhere in the camera's history, can result in out of spec. planes, but again, IMO, if there is no physical damage or wear at the structure's connection points, worn screw-holes, risers that have rubbed away mated surfaces, over-worn indents, etc., then I'd certainly give that camera a try, as no damage should mean, no major spec outside the OEM product, bellows excepted.

I have had one camera that was out of spec, my Hasselblad Flex-body, which had had one back vertical support, pushed forward and caused a 3-4mm out of plane error, but that was an easy fix, and I suppose many cameras by good makers, might be on the market, with easily fixed errors of that sort.

IMO.
