Are there any truly memorable double exposures or are they just interesting at best?

RFF member photony texas does some pretty memorable double exposures:

That one is stunning, truly remarkable!

I'm surprised that we don't see more double exposures since they can be created digitally in PhotoShop. It makes it easier to align and adjust exposures compared to in-camera film doubles.

I don't consider those double exposures... just as I don't consider the works of Uelsmann or Minor White - while masterful, to be double exposures. It becomes photomanipulation or composites...

wOw… thanks for the comments...

I'm glad to hear some appreciate my work. I shoot all in camera; both film and digital, never use photo manipulation to build the image. I've come to the realization that most either like/love the multiple exposures or cannot appreciate even the least thing about them. Over the years I have some emails that challenge my technique and even claim them as faked…

I use multiple exposures as a tool for my artistic expression, which for some comes in conflict with standard documentation photography. I posted my first double ever on RFF, look at my gallery here and you can see the historical progression of them.

The hit rate on them is not very high, you can control the imagery used, the exposures used and to some extent the register but with rangefinders it becomes a challenge. Tri-X makes for a great film to start with because of it’s exposure latitude, sometimes I have carried the first shot in camera for days/weeks till finding what might be a suitable second exposure. I have shared my technique with the few on RFF who have asked, especially shooting doubles on the digital Leica MM, M8 and M9’s.

Although I’ve developed a technique that works for me I truly believe it’s the Image and what it conveys in the end and not what equipment or technique is used.

Again thanks for the RFF support from some fantastic photographers over the years.
Oh…ha… I do shoot the occasional single exposure :D
check them out on flickr or here in the gallery.
