Yes that Pentax K1000 is very nice, and a friend of mine has a Spotmatic that he uses for his travel photography. A shop nearby has a new K1000 and I'm tempted but I don't really need it.

On the Olympus I like the 28-48 wide zoom even though it's the only zoom I have and I don't like zooms. This one is good.

Started out using my Dad's near-complete Contarex outfit and fell in love with the Zeiss glass, especially the 85 2.0 Sonnar (any guesses which medium telephoto I want for my RF ;) ) That camera was great - it had such a quirky look but was, nonetheless, very nice to shoot with.

When I moved away from home I couldn't afford a Contax SLR which was my dream camera until I foolishly handled a Leica M, so I bought a used Canon Elan and a couple decent lenses. Still have it assuming that one day I'll get a DSLR body. But somehow there's always something more appealing to spend my money on in the RF world.

I can still, however, be found trolling eBay looking at Contax kits...who knows...

My first SLR was an Olympus OM10. I had to save up for the Shutter speed add on! :)

Nikon nowadays...

Zenit 3M, Pentax Spotmatic and Nikon F3hp in that order. I still have the Nikon but haven't used it since I got my first RF camera three years ago.

When it comes to SLRs', I have no brand loyalty. I own and shoot with an old Nikon F and an old Canon F-1.

I started with Praktica SLRs an MTL 5 and then a VLC before I 'progressed' to an EOS 30 - great camera. I now shoot a 20d and am saving for the 5d replacement whenever that comes out.

I have three Canon EOS Rebels; a Ti, a 2000 and only last week I picked up a 1000 Fn from Adorama's E bay store for a paltry $19.00. As I live in NYC I saved the shipping charge by picking it up at the store. After many years of shooting SLR's starting with an Exakta VX IIa which I still have and which still works well,
my best shots are taken with SLR's much to my chagrin as I really love RF's. As I am now a senior citizen I figure that by the time I am 90 or so I should have caught up.

I've used Nikon slr's since the late 60's. My first was a Nikomat Ftn w/50mm f1.4 lens. I now own:

2 - F2s
1 - F3HP
2 - F4s
1 - D100

I use a variety of Nikkor primes, and a couple of 3rd party zooms.

I love my RF cameras, but I also shoot with my Nikon slr's often.

Olympus OM.

Because they are closest to rangefinders in size and quietness. And there is virtually no difference between a consumer lens and a pro lens - there is only one line-up :)

Nikon
FE and F90X (sale pending on the F80 so I won't count it).
Mostly prime lenes (pre-AI, AI and AF ranging from 20mm to 200mm) and a couple of zooms (used mostly on the Nikon-based Fuji S1).

Canon!

For SLRs I almost exclusively use my F1N(s). I am spoiled by the spot metering, build quality, and lenses. I use T90s when I need a flash. I started with Pentax SP, great cameras, and great lenses. I still have a few. I bought and used a recent Nikon. It felt too "plasticky". Then of course, I only use the old Canon stuff. I am sure the Nikon F2 is good camera. ;)

p.s. You must have a happy cat!

SLR's that I use include both Canon and Nikon plus a few others.

Bronica ETR and ETRS
Canon F1, FTBn, A1
Nikon F3HP, FA
Olympus OM-1, OM-2
Pentax Spotmatic F, Spotmatic SP

My favorites are Nikon F3HP, Canon F1 and Olympus OM-1 all for different purposes, The F3HP with MD4 motor drive when I am taking action shots of kids, sports events, and macro photography. The Canon F1 with 300mm or 500mm lens for wildlife. The black Olympus OM-1 with 50mm f1.4 for my walk-about slr.

I am not predjudiced for or against any of the makers.

I just picked up a Konica Autoreflex T with a 40mm f1.8 pancake Hexanon lens that I will be playing with.

I started with a Pentax ME as my first SLR camera and soon added the MX. Then switched systems to Nikon, buying an FE2 and FM2n, later adding an F.

I currently still have a Nikkormat FTn, FG, 801s, and F4s. All available for sale.

I got my first modern SLR with the Canon AE, followed by AE-Program, then A1, then by F1N (2 bodies) then F1n, Pellix, and then finally by T90 (2 bodies).

The T90 and the F1N were my workhorses for many years. Both have built-in spotmeters, and both are built very ruggedly.

I started out with both the Nikon and the Canon systems, but then decided to optimize my lens choices by building up only one of these two systems. Nikkor lenses were more expensive than Canon lenses, so I sold my Nikons and kept the Canon lenses.
