Nikon since day one for me. Though at college I tended to use little Pentax SLR's and they were great little things.

I've been an Nikon SLR guy forever. Had an old Ftn...and have progressed through many to the D200 - which is a magnificent piece of equipment, but a bit much to bring along for casual shooting. My late Uncle was the corporate pilot for the Parker Pen company back in the 60's. He was given a Leica SLR by the company president, but actually passed it along to my oldest brother because he was a rangefinder user. And, oh yes, he used Leicas. In the mid-80's I had an Olympus point and shoot that performed magnificently. My family members were mostly Olympus rangefinder users.
Photography has been in my family since my grandfather shot and processed his own as far back as 20's.
Now, I going to have, today, in my hands my first Leica!
I truly enjoy and appreciate RangefinderForum. PC

What the hell is this "Canon or Nikon" slr shooter dichotomy ?
To what club I have no access if I didn't gamble on behalf of the mightiests, under the banner that bigger is better ?
I am and have been an OLYMPUS MAITANI slr fan from the time Olympus company was smaller than them but unlike today still challenging both monopolies of the industry. It challenged them with genious rather than money power. And for this reason, sorry folks, The story of manual focusing SLR belongs to Olympus, much more than Canon, or Nikon.
Therefore Huubl friend, your basic formulation of Nikon, Canon, or "Other", is rather mistaken and shortsighted.
Cheers,
Ruben

It is always good to hear that the photography gene passes down the generations! Best of luck with the Leica.

Ruben - I suspect Nikon/Canon caovers the pro end of the market from the 1980s onwards. There are plenty of "other" users, especially Pentax M42 and K, Oly OM, Yashica/Contax etc. they are all cameras in the end, that you learn to love and use. I for one can never find the shutter button on a Nikon F after using my Pentax for a while - it just seems to be in the wrong place.

My (D)SLR lineage is as follows...
Zenith EM->Praktica MTL-5->Canon A1->Nikon FM->Nikon F801->Canon 350D
The A1 was swapped for the FM due to the A1's dependancy on its battery. The FM was ok, but the results were nothing outstanding. The FM was also not very portable, it was eventually traded in. When I was after the FM's replacement, I was looking for an EOS... none of which were (apparently) on sale in Malta, so I ended up with the F801.
The digital era arrived, I took a point-n-squirt digital compact to Malta, and returned with filled media cards and one shot on the F801. A Minolta Dimage 5 soon replaced the PnS, but the dazzling display of uncertain AF and its general lack of speed got frustrating, it had to go ASAP. I got the chance of buying a DSLR, I went for Canon, I've not looked back since.

Grandpa was pretty good..
Thanks Zuik. Grandpa was pretty good. Got us started with the whole darkroom madness - even inspired me as a teenager to get a TLR. A friend then commented disparagingly , "it looks like my Grandpa's camera!" "I know, I replied, mine too!"

I think I would pretty much regard myself as a Nikon SLR shooter these days but thats perhaps more thru chance - had I happened to buy a Canon first I would have probably stuck with that brand - Once you get a few lenses, system flashes etc it s a big decidion to swap over to the "other" brand. Having said that, I should acknowledge that the above comments relate to modern gear. In older gear I am all over the place. I have owned and still own Pentax (M42 mount) Canon and Nikon gear in addition to Leica and Canon RF gear.) Of the older non Leica and non RF stuff I must say that I am very impressed with the high optical and build quality of the Pentax M42 gear especially the lenses which are darned good.

It seems I have shot with just about everything SLR besides olympus. From K1000 and AE1 to Contax and Alpa.
Despite that, I love rangefinders more.

FILM - Used to shoot and Olympus OM1 and am now waiting for my first OM2 from ebay. Should be here tomorrow. Been wanting one of those since the early 80's. Love the look, build and feel - Timeless. Industrial art at its best.

... what Ruben said
I deliberately eschew the crowd or Canonese and Nikonians (having tried both) and found Olympus, now if only the modern Olympus wake up and re-introduce their past innovations...
