Canon 1-V for when mother nature is in a foul mood.
A Nikon F3-P to plink around with the 2.5/105.

But at the end of the day i keep coming back to the SL and R6.2, because nothing beats my 2/50 Summicron-R.
 
I cut my teeth on Nikons and had a second hand Nikon FM2 for roughly 16 years before finally trading it on on a new RF. It was a great camera - but bloody heavy. I now have an Olympus OM-2n in my kit as a back-up for the Bessa.

FM2 heavy? I guess it depends on whether or not you were "graduating" from a Nikon F or F2 or Nikkormat 🙂

I remember thinking how light an compact my FE was the first time I picked it up!!!
 
Its funny is'nt it how "the other man's grass is always greener"? I am a long time Nikon SLR user and very happy with Nikon. But still part of me would like to try the Canon system.

Kinda like being married!
 
Peter, get a Canon F1. You could fill a 4 car garage with all the accessories for it. Yes I know the Nikon F also had them but you talked about the Canon. I picked up an F1 a while back and am building on it. I got a 28 and a 200mm lens. A few more lenses and then I go for a motor. I had two of these from the time they hit the streets ( 1971) til 1992. I sure missed those cameras. :bang:
 
Well, I use either brand. I have four Canon SLRs (3 SLRs, 1 DSLR) and one Nikon SLR.

Nikons are great, but their problem is that you can use old Nikon lenses only, you can't use those great, old M42 lenses...

WHere are all the Minoltas ? My favourite is a SR1s , compact , no meter , and SR7v - same , but built in meter , I also have XD7 and Auto-focus Minoltas ... but the SRs are more challenging .

Never been a fan of the Canons- perhaps it is because the first ones I saw were AE1's. Still get them in my Photo 1 classes and just hate them. CONfusing little buggers. Not as bad as the led meter readout Minoltas, since the meter makes more sense. Big 35mm negs too- hard to get a black border unless you find that one really filed out neg carrier.

I've got to say that I think the Nikon F4s is the best tripod 35mm camera ever made. Simple, traditional knob and dial controls, great meters, easy to operate in the cold, pretty watertight, 100% viewfinder, excellent backward compatability for metering with old lenses, dirt cheap nowadays, and built like a tank. I put a LOT of film through my F4's and even thought they were all 2nd hand, I only had to do 1 repair- can't now even remember what it was.
 
I voted "Nikon," but my first SLR was a Ricoh Singlex TLS with its famous 50mm f 1.7 m42-mount Auto-Rikenon. I beat it to death shooting sports and "local interest" photos for a series of small papers, then traded it in years later for a Nikon FM2. Most recently, I've "gone backward" by buying a used
F2. You'll eventually get the camera you really want, it just might take thirty years to do so... 😉

After picking up photography and my Yashica Electro 35 GSN about a year ago and traveling halfway across the world with it, I now seemed to be getting bored with the GSN. So I decided to buy my first SLR. As of tomorrow morning I will own a Canon A-1, with the Canon fd 28/2.8, 50/1.4 and the 70-210/1.4.

I couldn't fit a similar Nikon outfit into my budget (the Nikon F2/F3 kits go for over four times as much!). For the same amount I would have gotton a larger Pentax, Olympus, Yashica or Practica kit, but I figured I wouldn't know how/why to use most of the extras. Some come with bellows and buckets of lenses. Too much gear will probably confuse me more that it will do me good. Also, the canon looks really good, especially compared to the bland Pentax K1000 or the industrial Practicas 🙂

As an old camera shooter from back in the dark ages, I think you made a good choice. When I had to shoot a seminar in New Orleans, US i bought an A1 to use for a backup to my F1. Since they both used the same lenses it was a perfect match. In between assignments, I used the A1 for personal stuff for over 12 years. I don't think the nikons, Pentaxes, or Practicas would get you any better photos than the A1.

Nikon. From Day One back in about 1978.
Currently shoot with motorized F, motorized F2AS, motorized FA, and an N65 (which is dedicated to a Sigma 12~24 auto focus zoom).
The old cameras use about 12 or 13 lenses, (primes and zooms), mostly AI or AIS Nikkors.
Thus my recent purchase of an S3 rangefinder was a logical step backwards.
