Yesterday while out roaming around with my M3 and Nikon FE looking for photo ops I was approached by a "PROFESSIONAL"
photographer who informed me I was not a "REAL" photographer because I was shooting film instead of digital.
SO.......Are you a "REAL" photographer???

I get told something like that. "Oh, still in the stone age, huh" ---> "Yeah, baby- one big EMP and your camera is fried and I'll still be up and running"
"Still using film, I ditched my film cameras" -> "THIS camera USED to BE Digital! I converted it to use film"
And "I've used digital since 1981. It is just SO last century".
I have to add, that I typically get approcahed by the professionals that tell me they wished they could still use film but their clientele have pushed them into digital.

C'mon. He didn't come out and say it like that, did he?
I get the "Are you still using film" thing quite often. Usually though, it comes from non-photographers who seem to think it confers "artist" status on me.

Shaken, so blurred
I wasn't today, but might be next weekend.[...]who informed me I was not a "REAL" photographer because I was shooting film instead of digital.

I'm with Brian. Many respectable working photographers would wish they could return to film, but their business deadlines/costs won't allow it. And, of course, there are plenty of people still earning a living using film cameras, usually to augment their digital.

Wow thats a shame guys, i get nothing but compliments... I dont know what it is, but especially when i have my humble Olympus Trip it attracts women! Mostly girls my age (early 20's) strike up conversations about using film etc. But even older women will comment, they quite often recognise the camera from their younger years.
I dont know what it is, but im not complaining.
Things might be different if i came into contact with a self proclaimed "pro". Maybe he felt intimidated by your Leica??

... likes film again.
I only got once the comment "Wow, using a film camera and an external light meter ! Are you a professional photographer ?"...

The best camera is one that still works!

I agree with your opening remark ... I get the same thing. Some poor pro lugging a DSLR with a zoom comes over and looks enviously at your rangefinder and remembers what fun amatuer photography used to be!

I actually read Olympus Trio... ouch, that's really Freudian.
Anyway, I use a lot of film, yes, but most people know that I live and breathe photography, so they suppose it serves some higher purpose. It does, it's more fun
And yesterday I ran into a pro who was shooting two airworthy Spitfires in the aviation museum I visited. Of course with fancy digital, but he spared me a comment when I was changing lenses: 'That's a real old fashioned Leica'. Indeed.

My M5s need red dots!
Oddly enough, I only get taken for a pro when I'm lugging about my Nikon gear. It seems that Leicas go (as they should) unnoticed...
BTW, last time I checked I was pretty real!

I was a real photographer today, went to a Mongol fest and blew through a roll of 24 shots in a few minutes, went into my bag for another roll, oops left it at home. So grabbed my Panasonic DMC-FZ5 (don't know what they call it if it has a red dot on it, but it has the vario elmarit lens) and snapped away, the 432mm (36mm equivalent) came in handy. I was happy with the stuff I got. What the hell, horses for courses.

Edward Burtynsky was glad to see that I was shooting film. But then, so is he.

I'm an imaginary photographer. All my cameras
sound like "ta-pocketa ta-pocketa ta-pocketa".

That's exactly how he put it..
The funny part is he was carrying a Fujifilm P&S digital camera but was calling himself a "PROFESSIONAL".
Maybe I should have pulled my D200 out of the bag...:angel:

Did he kick sand in your face and run off with your girlfriend?
No...He's gay and was with his boyfriend...

Brilliant! I take it you're behind the subtle editing?
I'm not a real photographer. If you scratch the surface the cheap veneer comes away faster than you can say "Looftwaffle Eigentummy" and I'm revealed as a bad Soviet knock-off.

I'm a real amature photographer, but I'm having a fun time getting there. I usually get this remark "old school is still cool" then they sometimes add, I still have some film in the fridge from 19xx. Wanna get rid of it? I ask! I haven't gotten any yet!

I am perfectly happy to be a gentleman amateur. Life is far too short to be po-faced about professionalism.
Thing is, unless you are particularly frail of ego, it really doesn't matter what others think, does it?
