Argus Cintar5cm 3.5 on EP-2

I took some photos of fishing boats just before sunset with a rigid Tessar 5cm 3.5 that Brian put together for me. He told me that no such lens exists in Contax mount as rigid. I used an Amedeo adapter with this lens and mounted it on the EP-2. I used the lens wide open, so the results may be soft, but this is OK for such images. I am very pleased with the EP-2. The internal stabilization system works perfectly, and the camera is small and light.

Edited: I should have realized that the lens is an Argus Cintar In Contax mount and not a Zeiss Tessar! I have both lenses, and I did not see the name well.

Next time, I will use a smaller aperture and have a higher ISO. This should give sharper images. My family was eating some Gelato, while I quickly took some photos, after I [quickly] finished eating my pistachio Gelato.

The blue cast looks weird, but the scene was dark and cloudy, and the camera was set on "cloudy".

Glad you like the new lens. Is it a pre-war or post war CZJ? If post war it should be comparable to the West German rigid (only) 50mm 3.5 lens. I can attest that that is a really nice and sharp lens to use. I like all of your pictures posted here too.

Hi Bill,
My apologies.
The lens is an Argus Cintar that Brian crafted into Contax mount.
He also made a rigid Tessar for me, but the lens used here was the Cintar.
I expect the Tessar to be sharper than the Cintar.

Post war CZJ lenses are all made with serial numbers above 3,000,000 and usually marked with a T for coated. They were originally made for the post war Contax IIa and IIIa and shown in early post war Contax literature. Also they were mounted in early Contaprox I's. I have one of these and it's a great macro lens especially on my NEX-7. The uncoated versions need to be used with a lens hood and the coated ones benefit from the hood too (IMHO.)

I prefer the Contax collapsable lens hood as it gives the best cut off of stray light.

Well Bill, I have an uncoated Tessar lens, but I goofed here. The lens that I used was an Argus Cintar.


I have the pre-war 5cm 3.5 and also a 5cm 3.5.

The Argus Cintar is a three element lens and not as sharp as the Tessar. If you have a Contax adapter try your Tessar. You'll like it.
