This is the 100 asa version. Arista Edu Ultra and Arista Premium.

Which do you prefer and why??

Any sample shots??

The premium is Plus-X. If you like Plus-X, buy the Arista, its cheaper!

The Ultra is Fomapan 100. If you like it, buy the Arista version, its cheaper.

Foma-100 is a lot grainier than Plus-X. I think its about the same as Tri-X. It has nice tonality though, but the 120 version CURLS BAD.

I like 100 speed films and I've shot a lot of A-EDU and A-Premium. I started off with the Foma version and shot it for a while. Freestyle had short dated 100'ft rolls and I bought a bunch to use. When I started running low the Kodak rebrand A-Premium had just come out so I decided to give it a try. I liked the plus-x version more and I've stuck with it since.

If I had to compare them I would say Foma100 had more grain and grey tones. Plus-x looked a little sharper and had a little more contrast. Both films were developed in Rodinal 1+100 with regular agitation.

I've had a lot of fun shooting fomapan and processing it in HC-110 but I'd go for the Arista Premium because I have great memories of shooting plus-x.

Thanks for the comments.

Plus-X was a favorite of mine for many years so I will probably go with the premium..

I agree with Chris, mostly.

I find Foma/Edu Ultra 100 coarser than FP4+/Delta but finer than TriX in all developers; I'd say it is smack in between. In Xtol; however, even 1+2 the grain vanishes. In this regard it is just like APX100, which performs the same magic trick of making the grain disappear in Xtol. Its incredible the difference (Foma 200 is the same) and does not seem to make sense, but the eyes do not deceive.

If you are not enlarging too far, Edu Ultra 100 in Rodinal is beautiful.

My personal value choice would be Legacy 400 (Its Neopan 400) which has grain close to FP4+ and produces beautiful images.

I didn't have the chance to run Foma100 through Xtol, now I'm regreting giving away my last 100' roll last week. Foma100 in Rodinal got really grainy.

As much as I liked Foma100 I had scratching issues from my batch. Not small multiple scratches but long gouges that ran a foot or two along the film. After a couple hundred feet I started getting discouraged. For the record the scratched lot did come from a freestyle short dated sale ending around fall of 2009.

Foma100 in Rodinal (Stand) is nowhere as grainy as Tri-X in the same process. It also has a really nice "wet" quality to the tonality.

Both shot with Contax T3 + flash (set at 2.8)

Maybe it's not a matter of graininess but of quality of grain. I was pleasantly shocked when I looked at my Foma100 film results. Full of character and great tonality with rich blacks. I think I'm going to switch to 100asa film for a while and see how fp4/acros/foma100 behave.

I had serious emulsion issues (mainly emulsion flaws showing as comets and scratches) with Foma 200 (in 120 and 35mm from Freestyle) in 2008 and again 2009. My Foma (Arista edu ultra) 100 has been fine in both formats.

FWIW I find the look of Foma 100 in Xtol 1+X tonally beautiful. Its ideal for femal portraits in that the tones are very flatering and the film appears ever so slightly soft, rather than biting. I just collected a 20x16 off 35mm and I had to sniff the print to find the grain. I also collected some 20x24s from 35mm Foma 100 in Rodinal. The grain is there but so is the sparkle and its is beautiful under certain lighting. I dont like the look if you have a flat neg and have to print high contrast but if you have a balanced neg with nice scenic lighting the images are stunning. Some if the best I have ever made. Not a combo for extreme contrast scenes if you ask me (and I do semi-stand as standard) as something goes wonky in the tonality if you ask me, but a nice critty scene with some sunshine... beautiful results. Crisp tight grain that looks lovely.

I believe the premium 100 is the same as plux X and I have no experience with that film.

Another option with the Foma/Arista edu ultra 100 is to dev in mixed Xtol and Rodinal. This gives results with more bite than Xtol but without the pronounced rodinal look. IMHO it is the best all round option for this film out of the two. I bet pyrocat would be beautiful and good old D76 is prob great at 1+1 or more dilute (1+2 or 3) but I have not tried that either.
