Anyone know the origin of why so many lens names end with 'ar'? Is there some logic behind it or is it just a naming convention adopted organically from... somewhere. And then who would be the first to have used an 'arrrr' name?

I don't know, but I have an intuition, or let's say it's «heuristic» 😉

The first one was the (1900) Voigtländer Heliar, I suppose?

Heli- is certainly Ancient Greek, and the -ar rhymes with a couple of German adjectives, e.g.: «klar; wahr; rar» — that's «clear, transparent, bright; true; rare».

No. The Voigtländer Collinear/Kollinear and Zeiss Protar preceded it by a decade, and these are just the most popular ones...

You're right, even the «Planar» (1897) is older than the Heliar, my bad ….

Then the -ar is obviously a shortened form of the Latin adjectival suffixes –aris, –aris, –are; or –arius, –aria, –arium:

If there were lens designers called Bulgarov or Gibraltarovic, maybe. That is, the Russar was named after its designer Russinov...

The designer was a Otto Zimmermann, hence perhaps Zimmermannar, or Zimmermar 😉
