arte - the german - french broadcaster from Straßburg emitted on Sunday a feature about the photographer William Eggleston. (Repeated : Fr/Sa, 10.10. 04:30 04:56 arte William Eggleston, Fotograf Magazin/Kultursendungen)
In some scenes you can see him with a Panda M6 and a Nokton (prob. 1.2/35).
It is in my eyes another hint that this lens is totally underrated in public opinion.

cool. i'm an eggleston fan and ordered a 35/1.2 last week. i don't see any correlation between those two facts, but it put a smile on my face neverthless heh heh ;)

eek. i don't see any correlation
It is ok, because there isn´t any. I use also a 1.2/35 but I won´t compare me with egglestone ;)
I only wanted to draw attention on the feature (repeat see above) . In Europe you can see it also online till saturday on arte+7 (online video) (www.arte.de)
And on the fact that L-users often are smiling over Voigtländer/Cosina lenses.
A good lens won´t make someone to a good photographer, but a good photographer won´t use a bad lens.

I used to own this lens and I agree that's a great lens. It was just simply WAY TOO BIG for me - kinda defeated the whole point of having a (relatively) small rangefinder that i could have with me everywhere (the 35mm Summicron IV is my baby). I thought of keeping the lens for those "special situations", but in my experience it's difficult to predict exactly when those will be and therefore take the lens with you.

Are u sure that it was a nokton? I thought it was an older leica lens, but don´t know exactely wich one.
But the hood looked like a cv, thats right.

Had one once, loved it, traded it for something else, want another ;)

After watching the amount of drinking he does on the documentary, it doesn't surprise me he can only afford the CV like the rest of us ;)

His photos are not about technical perfection. In fact, to me he could have made his most famous photos with 5 dollar cameras. That's sort of what drew me to his work when I was getting started out. Color and compositional perfection? Sure.

i'm happy somebody talks about Arte which is the best thing that ever happened to the French and German television - the channel I'm watching right now and the last one I watch...

i don't think there is anything poor about him. his prints sell for $15-30k from the eggleston trust. i called to price one for a customer a few months ago and was shocked at the cost.

i also know a cousin of his who lives here in sausalito. she told me about the big family(yes, the ENTIRE family) trip to new york back in the seventies to see his first big show. she was a young girl then and said it was quite exciting, but most of the family didn't quite get what the hubub was about...

My 1.2/35 Nokton with a ND 0.9 filter is on my R-D1 95% of the time. I like the increased heft of the camera and the quality this lens produces.

My most used apertures are 2.0, 5.6 and 8.0. When it gets really dark the ND filter comes off and I shoot wide open.

15k/print?

Good lord. I was born in the wrong time and place. People have told me my photos remind them of him. This was before I knew who he was.

I'd be happy to get 15 dollars/print.

I know! How does it happen for some? KNow the right people? PAy off the right people? Sell your soul to the devil. how how how.....

At the time he got started, his work stood out. It's all about proper placement. Also, he knows how to market himself apparently. I don't know the first thing about 'breaking out.'

I do use CV lenses though ;)

Lived in Bars by Cat Power. One of my fave songs of all time. :)

I just bought the "In the real world" DVD. He shoots with a Contax G also... I guess.
