90% of the time, I'm getting good results with VueScan, using the exposure-lock method and then fiddling with levels in Aperture.

But every so often I get something like this:

I get this instead of nice gradients in shadow-black or highlight-white transitions.
Any solutions?

For the record, it's Kodak TMY-2, shot at 400 in Xtol 1:1 and scanned with a DiMAGE 5400.

That looks to me like Aperture is trying to find detail in the scan where there is none. When I get that effect I back off on the shadow tool and/or darken the shadows and/or up the contrast until it goes away.

Maybe try scanning with less contrast and up the contrast in Aperture? Chris Crawford has an excellent tutorial on his website about scanning for low contrast and developing the scanned image with curves.

It's hard to tell from the crop… but it seems underexposure when the shutter was open is the principle problem.
