artsy effect

It's been done to death, I reckon, but sometimes I like this style (see photo). But... how do I get a photo to look like that? I don't know what the effect is called, so I can't really google it. Please, help. :) BTW, I'm using PaintShop Pro 7, so any methods that work with PSP would be even more appreciated.

It's actually quite simple. First you raise the contrast (as well as brightness) a bit. Then you reduce the number of colors to 2 (black and white). I use the Gimp for that:

Image / Mode / Indexed / Use black and white (1-bit) palette
Make sure you set "color dithering" to "none"

Send me a PM if you want to know more Remy.

Edit: found how to do this in PS as well: Image / Mode / Indexed color / Palette: uniform / Colors: 2 / Dither: none

No PSP here, but using PSE 2.0, under Filter\Artistic\Cutout or Filter\Sketch\Photocopy would give me a similar effect.

Posterize or Threshold under the Image/Adjustments menu gave also a similar effect.

It seems pretty simple, an extreme contrast effect. Almost like Kodalith. It will vary in success though based on the original moderate contrast you start with....
