as long as we're talking about gear, part 2...

Elmarit 28/2.8 asph
Summaron 35/3.5
Jupiter 8

these days , it's typically one body or the other and one lens in 3 Million Dollar Crumpler whether on my bicycle, in the car or on foot. it's nice to have choices, but it's also nice for life to be simple. if I grabbed the wrong focal length, I can simply move my darned feet to accommodate.

my budget is more minimalist than my kit.

When I was younger, before I had a bad back, my typical kit would be:

2x Canon F1N AE bodies

17/4
24/2
28/2
35/2
50/3.5 macro
55/1.2
100/2.8
135/2
200/2.8
300/4 or 300/5.6
2xA, 1.4XA, 2xB teleconveters
Tripod or monopod
cable release, many filters, hoods

The old Canon FD stuff is very heavy

M8, Canon 50mm 1.2 LTM, 35mm C-Biogon 2.8 and a D-Lux 4.
And the great thing is, it all fits perfectly in the Billingham Leica Combi bag.

Ouch! The lenses options were cool, though...

My current perfect RF kit is my Ikon with the 50mm C Sonnar and my R4A with the 25mm f2.8 Biogon. I'll be using this combo to photograph an event at the end of the month over fourty eight hours in a fairly confined space where I need to be able to single people out but also take in the over all environment ... the 50/25 combination seemed logical to do this when I really thought about it.

It's good to have choices!

After walking around airshows for 2-5 days, I know I need to narrow my kit down, probably go the m4/3's to lighten my load.

A minimalist kit was my main motivation in moving to film, and currently my rf kit is an M3 and 50mm Sonnar, and an M4 with a Canon 35mm f2.

For me, one lens per body works great, eliminating lens changing and the number of variables between me and my shot. I sometimes take both out with me, but most days I just find myself with one of the two, slung across my chest and without any camera bag.

I fluctuate between 35mm and 50mm, but do think of a 21mm and 90mm on occasion, so perhaps I may bolster my kit in the future.

An M is usually my constant companion, but sometimes I want something more compact, and take neither but my Rollei 35T. The scale focus I find manageable for daylight street shooting, but I really want something similarly compact with a focussing aid of some sort.

Most of my cameras are single lens, and I find this works for me. I used to carry about a digital slr with 3/ 4 lenses, and am quite happy these days to jettison choice in favour of simplicity and light weight. Just how I roll.

The kit I carry in my Domke 5?(small) bag is M6, M4, and 3 lens:21mm, 35mm, 50mm. I also have a 28 and 85 that i normally don't carry. The M6 has the 35cron mounted and is my main camera and lens with which I take at least 75% of my pics. The m4 usually has the 21mm mounted. I use the 50 like a telephoto.

Hi Joe,

I am not a hardcore minimalist, but I do own only two cameras presently, a M2 and a MP. I own 4 lenses that I use all the time -- these being 28/35/50/75 FLs. I do have a special 50 that I use for lowlight, but rarely otherwise. I tend to carry two lenses in these common pairings:> 50/28 or 35/75. Recently I have been carrying my MP/75 and M2/35 a lot. This goes in fazes, as I can see an urge to shoot the 28/50 combo this coming weekend :)
I feel I am quite happy with my gear...though I wouldn't rule out my adding a nikon f6 and a 21mm FL at some point. Also I would like to replace a stolen M3.... So that is it for my gear. Not done, but quite content.

looking back, way back...i think my best moment, gear wise, was when all i had was a simple cle kit, body and 3 lenses...28/40/90...small, light, great lenses and body all in a lightweight bag.

But that was film and you've left those days behind!

I'm surprised you haven't gone to micro four thirds ... or did you try that ... I can't remember? :D

When I had an interchangeable lens RF kit I had a M4-P with an 35mm and an M3 with a 50mm planar. I also had a 15mm but didn't use it regularly.

My current kit is an XA (35mm Zuiko), a Canon 5d Mkii with the 50L, and a Rollei TLR. Don't feel hindered at all.

film or digital, the gear still weighs...

as for m4/3...i have had 3 panasonic g1 bodies, the 20, 14-140, 14-45, 45-200...

as of today, i only have one g1 body and the 20...and an oly 4thirds 35 macro...and i just got this led ring light for macro that is oretty cool...

I have to admit I'd love to get another Rollei TLR w/ a planar or xenotar along with a M2 w/ a 35mm lens. But this would be pure luxury and not utility.

Yashica GX and that's it.

If not that

My Panasonic LX3 digital camera

Never take both at the same time. Then again. Haven't taken a picture in 3 weeks or so.

I went for a motorcycle ride around today and took my newly CLA'ed OM2n with 28 and 50mm lenses. Took about 15 shots, all with the 28.

Super minimalist one body one lens M4-p & Nokton 50/1.5. i want to stick with this for a while before i expand my kit due to both a desire to get to know the camera and lens as well as a lack of funds right now.

II walk around all day - every day - with a body and a longish lens with a wide in my pocket. Usually it's a D3, but I always have at least one body and one lens. Lately it's been a Hasselblad and a 100.

It's not that I don't believe you, but I've always wondered what people who say they walk around with cameras in their pockets are wearing. The cameras I own -- RF's and an OM -- fit in the pockets of a couple of my winter coats. The thing is, I haven't worn those coats in several years, and then only for a few days during a rare cold snap. No way those cameras fit in the pockets of anything else.

So, I'm left to conclude that this camera-in-a-pocket thing is very much keyed to climate. Folks up in the frozen north, where wearing a coat with deep pockets is obligatory for months and months, can pull it off. Down here in the southlands, we're wearing tee-shirts and shorts 10 months of the year.;)

Hexar RF with a 35'cron
M3 with a 50'cron or an adapted Zeiss Opton 50/1.5 (people lens)...

I've learned to accept that I'm a one camera one lens shooter (ie. I can carry more - lenses and or bodies, but I basically just carry it).

If shooting indoors, I take the Hexar RF with 35cron.
If shooting outdoors, I take the M3 and 50'cron.
If shooting people/portraits, I take the M3 and Z-O 50/1.5.

I've owned and used the VC15, VC21, VC28, 90'cron, 35summaron, Canon 50/1.8 and Hexanon-M 50/2 and although all are fine lenses, the 35 and 50'cron are the sharpest and best handling lenses that I can afford.

The less I carry the more I shoot because the less I have to think about gear options/alternatives.

When I want wide I use a SWC - no 35mm WA I've used come close to the IQ and speed of use of the SWC for me.

The key for me is to carry the minimalist gear that prevents me spending precious time and energy thinking about gear and instead more focused on seeing what's around me that might look interesting as a photograph.
