I took my Mamiya 7 and Bessa out yesterday but was uninspired to take any photos. I fancy doing some project but can't come up with anything interesting. My brain doesn't seem to work when I'm on nightshifts. Anyone got any ideas? I'm in London BTW.

Thanks
Sam

scout for people in heels... they're bound to trip up..

you can have the challenge of mastering comic timing in a photograph, just as they face turns from smile to horror and bags and legs go everywhere. I'd love to see a photo like that 😀

Or, get a photo of the ears of passer's by. This involves getting up a little close, and seeing how many people you can get before you're spotted or caught.

Hmm or ask people on the street to pull funny faces, or pick people at random to kiss each other. It's even better if their spouse is there. Just say its for such-and-such tabloid and they'll do it.

Take photo's of people's wallets. This involves first stealing the wallet, then taking a photo of it as it falls through the grates on the drain cover.

Hope that helps

Take out the bessa and a roll of 36. Force yourself to shoot the whole roll within a couple of hours. It's a good exercise when you get blocked.

I'm currently taking photos of traffic wardens who park their cars/vans/mopeds illegaly so they can give people tickets.

As they're privatised now, they have no right to be doing so.

This is my sad little way of fighting back.

I second that suggestion. Whenever my inspiration runs dry this is precisely what I do. You'd be amazed at what you shoot when you force yourself to fire off a whole roll of film in an hour. The shots from that roll will likely suggest a project to you. Good luck.

Camden's a great place for photos. Just watch your gear. Speaker's Corner at Hyde Park on the weekends is full of orators who will gladly let you take their photo.

That Mamiya 7 will serve you nicely for some cityscapes or landscapes too. Just head to the river or to some park.

or fat people.

I'm sorry that sounds shallow and pathetic. But I think people SHOULD be photographed. No matter what. Why should anyone get special treatment or be avoided? From a moral standpoint these people must become aware their life is at stake, and they NEED to lose that weight, be it clinical or any other reason - and an ex of mine had a very large mother, I didnt judge. She turned out it was a blood condition that caused the ballooning and elephant feet etc.

throw some inspiring music in an ipod (or similar) and walk/drive around. i.e., miles davis, chopin, philip glass, helmet, sinatra, etc. each will open up the valve of creative jucies.

Think about issues that concern YOU in any way !

You're working nights? I started shooting my workplace a couple years ago, great series. Fortunately I survived the job and went on to other things... It might be something to think about. Here's a sample.
My boss of course understood I was an artist, and the place was photogenic or apalling if you prefer...

Focussing grease can help also (i.e. Beer) or for those that don't, Orange juice.

... it sounded sensible in my head...

Actually only one of the shooter and subject needs to be inebriated, hang around pubs at closing time, maybe bingo halls, PTA meetings, places where lawyers congregate, you get the picture, and maybe you will 🙂

Thanks,
James
