Hi Folks,

Just picked up a CV 15/4.5 Heliar and I'm just wondering if there is a way to mount a filter on it?

Anyone else done it or is being filter-less the price you pay for going so wide? :)

Cheers!

Bob.

good morning, bob
i remember three possibilities for mounting a filter on this lens, but a search on the forum may give you the details:
1) mounting a filter (39mm?) without metal rim using tape or O-rings
2) using the CV 77mm filter attachment for the CV 12. needs tape around the 15mm flange because the adapter for the 12 is slightly larger
3) milich filter adapter for 15mm - may be available used?
good luck
rick

Thanks for the tips guys.
I may try buying one of the Voigtlander push-on lens caps and adapting it with a 39mm filter to form a push-on arrangement. :)

Put the filter in backwards as not to touch the glass, use a small piece of velcro on the edge of filter to hold it in. Works great and does not fall out

When you say put the filter on backwards do you mean after having removed the filter's glass from its screw-in mount, or do you mean wedging the entire thing into the 15mm's built-in shade? I own the Milich adapter referenced above and I had never been able to get proper results, no matter which way I mount the filter, forward or backwards, within its screw-in mount. I get severe vignetting in the corners.

What I did was find a 39mm B+W UV filter and took the glass out, then I ground off the male (rear) threads flush, and then expoxied it to the front ring of the lens just inside the hood fins. Basically, I added filter threads to the lens, so I could attach a 39mm IR-cut filter for the M8. Without a filter the adapter does not vignette on full-frame, so I can still use it on film.

Hi Bob,
I found a thin O-ring at my local hardware store fitted it over the threads on a 39mm B&W IR- 486 filter and pressed it into the hood until it fit flush against the lens. Very solid but easily removed without any marks or residue on the lens.
Enjoy the 15/4.5. Its a great lens.

Great tips!

Just waiting for my 39mm UV/IR Cut filter to arrive then I'll try and put these suggestions into practice. :)

Bob.

Any of the following works:

  • O ring on the threads and put the filter in backwards
  • Bead of silicon along the outer threads and place the filter in its "normal" direction
  • Jam some wooden shims (i.e. soft toothpicks) between the filter and the lens shade
Best
Rob

I just wrapped a length of insulating tape around the outside of the filter to 'fatten' it up enough to make it a tight-ish fit inside the hood. Seems to work fine. I have the Milich 15mm hood and find it's more trouble than it is worth - I got vignetting and I'm not that sure that it was very secure. It feels like the hood could be easily knocked off.

If I can remember where I put it, I have an empty 39mm filter, so I might try grinding the threads off - I have an idea that I might enable me to use the lens with an IR72 filter attached...mmm interesting!

Ben Z, it's good to know that I'm not the only one here who isn't afraid to cut, file, and epoxy what I want where I want it. Now I just need to paw through my collection of 39mm filters and decide which one to sacrifice.

Thanks, but did you buy an M8 or are you considering doing this for using on a film camera? While the epoxied adapter itself won't vignette on a film body, if you attach a filter to it, it will. At least a 39mm filter will vignette, maybe if you were to use a step-up to some larger size it wouldn't, but I've never tried.

CV 15 filter problem

Hi, Bob -
I have an answer for you, but it's not an easy fix as it takes a little work.
For details see the article on the website LHSA.ORG for a discussion on mounting E39 filters to the CV 15mm lens. You don't need to be an LHSA member to go to the "articles" section, listed under the resources heading on the home page. The second article addresses your question. Hope this helps.
Good Luck LHSAMAN

At first I didn't understand what the fuss was all about. You got the earlier design 15mm non rangefinder linked lens. The latest design 15mm lens takes a 52mm threaded on B&W filter. Good Luck!

Success!

Success!

Well my filter is now securely held in place by a bit of black tape and very nicely it works too. thanks all for your advice. :)

Another question - I can't currently code the lens for my M8 as the mount adapter had a cut away where the coding marks go. I believe you can get a Voigtlander Type II Screw Mount Adapter which will accept the coding. Does anyone know where I can get one of these in the UK or Europe? So far I can only find them in the US ans the postage costs seem to be prohibitive.

Thanks again!
