Attacked on Amazon!

Some dude named "Alex Posner" decided to attack my photo book on Amazon.

Check out his spelling!

I always judge a man by the enemies he keeps. You are doing well in my eyes. I would keep this in mind.....I wonder how many books Mr Posner has published.

In the mean time here are some quotes about enemies to contemplate:

“I ask you to judge me by the enemies I have made.” (FDR - the source of my words above).

"Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much" (Oscar Wilde)

“The Bible tells us to love our neighbors, and also to love our enemies; probably because generally they are the same people.” G.K. Chesterton (You might say the same about critics.

And perhaps best of all......

“A man with no enemies is a man with no character.” Paul Newman

When shopping on Amazon I usually ignore the top 10% and bottom 20% of reviews.
I don't base my choices on what fanboys or cranks think.

Dan, I often look at the negative reviews to see if the poster had anything of substance to say. Most often they don't, but occasionally there is an observation worth finding.

This reviewer offers no justification for his purely subjective statement. This should be immediately apparent to anyone who reads the reviews and to anyone who would be looking for any form of artistic expression.

It's too bad he brought down your star count, but hopefully more reviews will take care of that. You didn't deserve this, but the anonymity of the Internet seems to attract churls.

Try not to let it bother you.

But if it does, that’s normal.

Maybe another glass of wine is all that’s needed when reading about stupids and their comments.

Publicly lamenting about one negative customer review (and the typo therein) and calling it an 'attack' is even more pathetic than to give that stupid review.

Dan, It's just one person's opinion....and not too much detail. Roll with the punches. I thought you New Yorkers had thick skin?

Thanks for the feedback. It's kind of like when I was a kid, and I'd start each new year with a clean binder - and try as I might - it always got trashed or marked or whatever -- so I put years of work on the book, and other people made it a truly joint endeavor - and then some jerk wants to take a crap on Amazon - which is not like saying something honest - but whatever, that's life. Cheers!

I don't think your pictures are boring. I like the slice of life that you show. Some greats have made a career of boring photos though: Martin Parr, William Eggleston, Stephan Shore (and I'm not knocking them, I like them all).

Dan,

FWIW, I've got your book, it's in my office, and when in need of a jolt of inspiration from the creative power of a brilliant eye and a damn good photographer, well, I look through it.

Mike

Your book is great Dan and worth every penny. Here's a link to a story about another photography book:

Dennis Kitchen's Book "Our Smallest Towns"

I went to photo school with him. One of only two that I knew that made it in photography. I recall one class critique where he was throughly chastised by the instructor. His reply was that he didn't care what others thought of his photos. He liked them, and that was good enough for him. I never could adopt that attitude. Perhaps that's why Dennis had a studio in a SoHo loft and I live in the world of Microsoft Excel. At least I do get to work with rural America!

Hope you issue another book someday!

I don't want to be cynical and say this is a thread designed to drive clicks towards your book on Amazon.

So, not being cynical, I'd honestly recommend getting a thicker skin (or just don't read the reviews) if you're selling books on a platform that allows reviews.
In the grand scheme of things his comment is fairly innocuous. You'll have worse than that eventually.

Dan, A review is an opinion, to which a reviewer is entitled. It won't necessarily be the same as the author's, artist's, builder's. It is also not a behaviour....it is an opinion.
