Illinois Attempt to get a Chicago club off the ground, 2007 edition

If I'm over this cold, I'll be there!
Ken, there has been a bug going around this year that people at my workplace have been getting, and it just won't go away. Don't wait for it. (unless you feel bad) The symptoms will be around for quite a while.

Francisco, where up north are you going? Just curious...

Does anyone have any ideas on what else we might do, aside from hanging around at Borders?

Liam, any events going on downtown that you know of that might be interesting, and that might contain some ops?

Of course, if it's raining, I have no problem staying mostly inside and being a weenie.

If anyone wants to shop for camera gear or just ogle, Central Camera might be worth a visit.

I was hoping to keep things freed up Saturday enough to maybe, just maybe slide in for a cup 'o joe, but........ story of my life........ stuff happens and looks like I'm booked solid til mid-afternoon. Sooo, another time -- but have fun, stay dry and keep us posted.

What about “Agora” in Grant Park? It may not be your taste in art but people's interactions with it are priceless.

Is Agora the big mercury-looking kidney bean? I've been there a few times in the last month, but if others haven't seen it or been there yet, I'll happily tag along. (majority rules, and all that!)

Jeremy, "Agora" is a group of figures designed by a Polish sculptress and donated to Chicago last year. The "mercury-looking" thing is known as "The Bean" (can't remember its name right now) in Millenium Park.

If we were heading to fairer weather, Millenium Park would be my favored destination... Although I've taken pictures there under the rain. Just about a year ago, I was there shooting with my Elmarit 28 and my Konica Hexanon 35 when I ran into another Leica user (easily identifiable by the finger motinon to advance film): Ken Tanaka (I believe) and his M7 with Summilux 35.

As for yours-truly, I'm rather in the West, but I also have a book club meeting at Lincolnshire, waaay up North. I'm based in DeKalb (which is West from Chicago), and, according to the weather forecast, I'm partially in the path of the winter storm that's hovering over Rockford and Southern WI just right now. Hence, we could go there tomorrow... but we'd be driving into a winter storm on the way back, and I really don't like the prospect. In fact, we may not go to our engagement either: we're 65 miles West from Chicago, but I've been in a car once in really bad weather and very low visibility and didn't really enjoy the experience (lots of lousy drivers out there).

Therefore, I'll have to wait until the next conclave. Can we make it in, say, a couple of weeks?

Sorry... but the weather is getting Biblical here in the Midwest, and I don't think our humble Saturn was made like Noah's ark. :(

Sorry I have to miss it... This ain't good... :bang:

It's a shame, Francisco, but understandable. It isn't worth the risk, I suppose.

I'm still going, as we will be taking the train and are not concerned with the weather.

I don't know when we will be going again. My wife and I have both been going downtown a lot lately, and are getting a little burned out on it. If there is an event going on, or something to go and see specifically, we might be interested.

There are some pretty good photographs in the Art Institute's basement that my Mom & I saw a week or two ago. All B&W.

The forecast as of this morning is for precipitation for afternoon & evening. 40% chance of snow this afternoon, and 100% chance this evening & overnight, 1-3 inches accumulation possible.

I agree with Ronald - let's pick a date now.

I'm still sick, and with the weather coming in - I won't be making it today. Rats.

How about Sunday, March 25? Since it is a Sunday, there won't be so many (other) tourists. Also, street parking is free, for those of us who would be driving.

Liam (rogue_designer), Kate (his gf), Kate (my wife), and I had a great time, even though we didn't do much photography. We dropped by Central Camera, where Liam picked up a busted Yashica-Mat and I dropped off my XA with the sticky shutter. The owner bought some eggrolls for us, and we happily repaid the favor by buying film.

The snow was just starting to come down when we were leaving town at 6:35, and up in the Round Lake area, there is already 3 inches on the ground.

The Canonet I bought from Liam is quite nice; I can see why people like them so much.

How about a Saturday? Central Camera isn't open on Sundays.

Sorry about being a dissenter here, but I really like the atmosphere in that place. Especially on Saturdays. On Sundays, the downtown is dead. I know it because I go to the opera on Sundays and never find a nice lunch place open. And the streets are deserted too... It's pretty much a ghost town... :(

As for parking, I know that Central Camera can validate your ticket at a certain parking lot nearby! :)

I'll get back to you soon! But, in principle, I really would like to meet with all of you! :)

Well... it seems that I can make it that weekend. My preference would be for Saturday (we could visit the photography exhibit at Columbia College that way), but if it's on a Sunday, I can go too.

Saturday the 24th works just fine for me (currently anyway).

It was good to meet JeremyZ, now I need to put real people with the other avatars. :D

So, Liam, does Jeremy look like his avatar?

Jeremy, does Liam look like the "rogue designer" minus the horns?

Inquiring minds...

BTW, I agree with Ken (and he DOES NOT look like his avatar! :)

Liam doesn't look all that much like his avatar. He has a beard now. In the avatar, it looks a bit like Toby McGuire. In reality, he has a thinner face.

It seems like the majority would rather do Saturday, so that's fine with me. (I'm not driving anyhow, so parking is a non-issue for me) Good points about Central & Columbia.

When I have my film processed, I'll post some pictures. (if they aren't embarassingly bad.)

I just committed to buy the start of a darkroom outfit, so with any luck, I will be developing my own in the near future.

Hey, Jeremy... we can have a nice expedition to Centra Camera to help you outfit your developing kit!

BTW, I don't look like my avatar! :)
