Howdy,

I'm looking at adding some audio and video to my work, specifically to help tell stories in a way that just photography can't for a project I'm currently working on (https://www.peterdavidgrant.com/an-unseen-oxford/). So far, I've been experimenting with a GoPro mounted on the camera to capture video, and some soundman binaural microphones (so audio is in stereo) that I wear in my ear with some street photography.

I was wondering what your general thoughts are about the video, anything you like or dislike?

(sidenote: anyway to embed youtube videos here? Guess not)

Much appreciated,
Peter

I like the combination of the video and the stills. But... (an idea, not a criticism)
What might be cool is if you added another gopro so instead of:
a) video from camera perspective, and
b) stills
you had
a) video from your perspective
b) video from camera perspective with FOV adjusted, and
c) resulting stills

So... video of the scene at wide FOV (gopro mounted on you) until you spot a worthy subject, transitioning to tighter FOV (gopro mounted on camera) and then stills as you shoot. The idea is the camera video could even capture the movement of the camera as it comes to your eye, etc - but not at the expense of seeing the overall environment.

Overall, I think this is a great project.

If the price of an additional gopro is a barrier, check the SJ4000 cameras (B&H sells them, among others) as they are a low cost alternative. Not quite a clone.

I've been experimenting with something similar too.

Wasn't really feeling the audio. I find it distracting and doesn't enhance the experience, but that's just me maybe. I've been adding music very low in the mix just to have something.

If you'd like to see the YT channel I am working on send me a PM.

Hi Sonny,

Thanks for the reply. That is a great idea! I was thinking of trying out mounting the GoPro on my body instead of on the camera anyway, but having both sounds like a great idea.

I'll look into it!

Peter

Hi Corren,

The audio here is more of a trial - long term I'm thinking it will have speech to go with the project (more like a podcast).

I'll send you a PM now!

Cheers,
Peter

The binaural recording works for me as it creates a connection to the surroundings. One video stream is a very limited view. Combining an overall view, what you see/face, and what the camera sees could be interesting.

Glad you liked the audio. With headphones on it can be shockingly immersive.

Yeah more video streams would definitely be an improvement.

Thanks for your thoughts.
Peter
