Austin SXSW. What to expect?

Hi All

I am going to attend a workshop next month in Austin during the SXSW festival.
It's kind of a big thing for me (Never had a serious workshop, and the costs were ...ehem....not easy to deal with at this stage of my life)
Anyhow, I have no idea whatsoever on what to expect from the workshop in terms of type of shooting, and more important, from the atmosphere in Austin during this festival.

Is it the David Alan Harvey workshop? I wish I could go... maybe sometime soon. For now, the money goes to film. I'm sure you'll learn something from this workshop. Probably one of the more interesting part of it is to hear what he thinks of your work.

I've had never gone to an official workshop before and I am curious to hear comments and experiences with them as well.

Yes, It's Harvey's workshop.
Along the years, I have had a few interactions with him, and he was very helpful.
So, yes expectations are high...;)
 
I'd expect some really great opportunities to shoot some bands and crowds :) - seriously though, sxsw is a great time and I'm sure it will be a lot of fun. I think you'll find a lot of other photographers there, so much so that you'll probably blend right in. A brand my company works for is putting on a showcase there, if you like, pm me and I'll give you the info for it and get you on the guestlist.

Do you know if bands are performing in the streets?
It sounds like a crowded event, where a wide (28 or 25) can be great...

I'll be there too! For music, though I will have cameras too.

It will be my first SXSW since some of the first SXSW festivals back in 1989-92. Back then it was a nothing event....cool, but laid back. I know that it is VERY different now. We used to just walk into any show we wanted...no problem.

My point? Don't worry about trying to get into any venues...it won't happen (Nonot's deal excepted). Even if you have a pass you might not get in. So...yes...there will be bands on the street, but the real action is at the un-announced house parties that you will "hear" about. There should be some good music and some good shots too.

i'll be down there covering the event for rollingstone.com.
it's a ****-show of pure occular delight.

id say you're going to want something wide with a flash, as most venues are dark and the lights suck.

you're also going to want a fast tele.

it's probably my favorite festival of the year, you'll see why!

what is this workshop you speak of?

there's great showcases, great parties, great unauthorized events such as the fader fort and miss b's - both on the other side of the bridge.

it's a rager, so get your sunglasses ready for night or day as they seem to run together.

i'll be there rocking some m bodies a d3 and probably an xpan.
i have a right sleeved arm and will have a sweaty brow.
bring a sweat rag, it gets hot up front with all the **** backlighting!

most of all enjoy!
 
Well, thanks for all the inputs.

I'm sory to say, but I am close to a total ignorant when it comes to american music (not being local doesn't help much).

That being said, it seems there will be some RFF'ers there.
If you want to meet, have a beer and maybe a bit of shooting together, just shoot me a PM...

David is a great guy and along with Alex Webb most responsible for getting me to understand what I could/can do with a camera.
