I just got this thing off ebay for $20. Can anyone tell me if I need anything else to use it? I have the Summitar already. Anyone know how close it focuses?

Thanks in advance.

payasam: Uh, thanks. Must learn to open my eyes once in awhile. ;) I had hoped for a closer focusing distance, but this should still prove to be fun. I see other ones going on ebay for as high as $179!

Gary: I had seen that thread before, but found it confusing without pictures. I read it again and it makes more sense. Looking in my "Leica Illustrated Guide II: Lenses, Accessories & Special Models", it seems that Leica made a similar product. The one for the Summitar was called the NOOKY-HESUM, and had a different design for the rangefinder lens. Where do they come up with these names!

'Leitz Catalogue Chinese' made sense in the days of telegraphic ordering, because you can convey more meaning with 5 letters than with 5 numbers. Arguably it's harder to make a mistake, too.

Some code-words have obvious origins -- ELMAR, EKURZ, ELANG (Elmars in 5cm, 3,5 cm short or 'kurz', 9cm long or 'lang'). Others are just plain weird: NOOKY is indeed a favourite, but a plain NOOKY is for an Elmar and NOOKY-HESUM is for (I think) the Summitar. And I've always wanted to see a 'spider' copier in the window of a camera store so I can go in and say, "How much is that BOOWU in the window?"

Cheers,

R.

LOL Let me know if you ever get a chance to do that. But I have to ask...what is a 'spider' copier?

It's a four-legged friend! (Well, all right, only half a spider).

A collar/spacer that gives a fixed extension, with four legs that are (a) as long as the focused distance and (b) the tips of which define the field of view.

Imagina a table with a hole in it. There is a Leica looking down through the hole. The field of view is the floor under the table, defined by the legs. The plane of focus is the floor.

Obviously the legs splay out, with a small collar/spacer rather than a rectangular spacer the size of the copy area. But I think you may get the picture.

Good for copying but also for insect photography and the like.

Cheers,

R.

I have an Auto-Up for a Canon 50/1.8 (on screwmount Canon cameras), and the focal range is 40" to 22". That's +1 diopter, lens at infinity focuses at 1 meter. I suspect yours is the same range.

Thanks, John. Yes, it sounds very similar. Do youhave any pictures to share taken with it?

BTW, I have a Canon IV with Serenar 50/1.8. I just did a C&L on the lens. Although the front element has some rather heavy "cleaning marks", it still seems to do okay now that all the haze is off the glass. The shutter curtains onthe camera, however, need to be replaced, as you can clearly see near the bottom of this thread:
