auto-ups

I can't recall seeing much on the topic of auto-ups. Since I am lacking in experience with their usage any helpful hints are appreciated.

I own a couple of different models, but have never used one. There are a couple of scarce models that seem to draw a bit of collector interest on the 'bay, but otherwise they aren't especially appreciated, money-wise.

Best advise is go out and try one. Match up the unit and the proper lens, and you are just attaching a close up lens with a built in viewfinder. I may try a few macros myself, now that the winter seems to be coming in cold....

I have one left over from my first Canon RF lens, the 50mm/1.8. Smacks his head hard :bang: for selling the lens & body ages ago. For some reason, I still have the Auto-Up in it's nice leather case with the original instruction manual. Everytime I think about selling it I decide to keep it as a reminder not to sell nice cameras and lenses. 🙂

I bought one cheaply for my Serenar 50/1.9, but besides playing with it I haven't actually used it yet... It does look kinda cool though! I haven't seen any instructions, so if anyone has any hints on using it I'd be interested as well...

After a fellow RFFer was kind enough to sell me a couple for a reasonable price, I did a little writeup on them, which you can see here (click this text for the link.)

I assume your Auto-Ups are for a II/III/IV series camera...? Have you tried them?

JLw, I have seen different models (online), for the 50/1.8, 1.5 and 1.2. They all look different, and then there are the ones from Pleasant as well. Do you know if any will work with an M body ? Is there one for the 50/1.4 as well ?

I believe an Auto-Up has to be designed both for a specific lens and for a specific family of camera bodies -- otherwise, the prism attachment won't be held in the correct spot in front of the viewfinder.

So, I would guess that to use an Auto-Up with an M body, you'd need to find a generic brand one that was made specifically for the finder dimensions of the M.

I don't know if Canon ever made an Auto-Up for the 50/1.4, but maybe some of the better-informed collectors do. Anyone...?

Thanks jlw... I will take a look at your site & try out mine tomorrow when there is some light. Maybe it's just because I'm using a Nicca & not the Canon it was designed for, but its much harder to see the rf patch with the Auto-up mounted.

Both of those pictured fit the 50mm f1.8 RF lenses.

The auto-up II is for 15" to 22". The other is for 22" to 40".

Pretty things to look at.

I wish I could keep this stuff. Selling sucks!!

jlw, an addition for your web page. The prism in the viewfinder part of the auto-up makes the rangefinder focusing accurate. Like a Leica NOOKY. Bends the light through the RF window.

The parallax correction is the little tick mark in the corner of the viewfinder area. That's the FOV at the closest focus. (The overall masking covers the most distant focus.)

Yeah, the price is high, but I think the Auto-Up for the 50/1.4 is uncommon, this one comes with the original box, most of all it appears to be black finish. That's the only black Auto-Up I've seen.

If you've got a factory-black VT (also quite rare) then this would be the Auto-Up you'd want to have to go with it. Fortunately I'm (almost) immune to temptation, since my VI-T has the garden-variety chrome finish...

Harry, thanks for the info about the finish. I see the one in the auction didn't sell ... although I admit I was tempted.

These attachments may not give super-accurate results -- but as a compact, easy way to get casual close-ups with an RF camera, it wasn't such a bad concept...

In fact, it's STILL not a bad concept, and with so many flavors of C-V Bessa cameras sharing a common viewfinder-window configuration, it should be possible to design a single Auto-Up that would fit ALL of them... are you listening, Mr. K???
