The last of four Canon Sure Shot Z135's finally arrived the other day, and to test it out I took a stroll along the Roanoke River Greenway in Salem, VA. It was loaded with Kodak Ultramax 400, and needed every bit of that speed as the day was very cloudy and wet. During a break in the showers, I saw a Great Blue Heron flying along the river, and stopped to capture an image of it. Not knowing how the weather was going to be, I decided to go ahead and shoot the rest of the roll there.

Nice cameras, but it took me four tries to get two good ones. Not bad for something that's been out of production for twenty years. A nice feature set, good ergonomics, and metal front cover make this a decent P&S for the enthusiast. It's a little big for a shirt pocket, but they usually come with a nice two-point neckstrap. Good exposures this time out. The only problems I had were when the zoom was fully extended (long shutter speeds contributing to shake), and getting the close-up feature to focus properly (more a case of choosing the right subject on my part). That, and I don't know if the 1.3 ft range refers to the distance from the front of the lens (it automatically zooms out to 94mm), or the from the AF transmitter. I'm not so close that I get a shadow of the lens when the flash goes off.

Anyway, I got twelve keepers from the roll of twenty-four (some of them just weren't interesting, more for testing the camera capabilities), four of which are below.

Nice pics Farly! I've got two Z135s and I'm wondering if you notice on yours that the viewfinders appear out of focus? Both of mine do and I realize it may be my eyes, but I don't have that problem with any other P&S that I have, and I have a bunch of them. I do like the cameras, but I don't use them much for that reason.

Harlee, I don't really notice them being out of focus so much as there is quite a bit of barrel distortion. I just ignore it.

I like the Z135 quite a bit, but I do think that they missed the mark on the viewfinder, especially for those of us who are bespectacled. A diopter would have been a nice addition. The Z115 has the same squinty VF.

They did get the viewfinder right on the Classic 120. Nicely in focus, and with the diopter adjustment.
