Avoid member446885 on ebay

Purchased a Jupiter 8 from ebay user member446885, who's real name is Keith Rock. Bidding ended January 16, and I finally received the lens today. That wouldn't have been a problem, except he had repeatedly promised that the lens was shippped out back in January. When I received it today it was postmarked 2/22/05. He has a 99.6% feedback rating with over 13,000 positives, so my experience was definitely not the norm. However, the repeated lies and excuses are just too much.

Oh, it's the guy with bad photos? 🙂 Somehow none of the equipment he describes as "mint" looks mint on my screen.....

i buy filters from keith on what seems like a regular basis.
they are always as described so i have not had a problem on that account.
his shipping is slow but then again, most things shipped to me from outside the country are painfully slow.
his e mails are usually quite brief.

i like his stuff but not the speed of shipping.

Yeah, I've also bought stuff from Keith before. Got my Praktica MTL3 body from him awhile back - didn't experience any particular delays in that shipping. But recently received an SMC Takumar 28mm f3.5 from him -- that lens took just about forever to arrive. Didn't manage to check the postmark because the package had been wet in the rain, and everything was soggy. The lens also came with a tiny, tiny hairline scratch that he probably didn't notice, and offered to return/refund, but I declined.

All in all, a mixed experience buying from him, but at least the stuff arrives, and arrives more or less intact.

Don't get me wrong, Kyle... but you weren't precisely scammed. The delay in shipping is really excessive but your post sounds as if you had been taken. I'm glad you didn't lose anything!

In any case... I'll try to remember this number/logon ID when I browse on eBay.

BTW, I had a similar experience with a Canonet. The seller (whose name I finally forgot) had a fairly good feedback number; my experience with me almost prompted me to leave a neutral feedback comment, but then opted for a positive green with a very tepid text. I think I wrote "Nice guy, but the camera wasn't good and refund took some time."

Yes, you're right. I wasn't scammed. However, I believe that a month of being lied to is a bit excessive. I'm normally a very forgiving and easy going guy, and if he simply said "meh, I was a bit lazy and didn't ship it today." I honestly wouldn't have been bothered. But when he was telling me it was shipped way back in January and I finally receive it post marked 2/22 it just sort of irked me.

It was just a Jupiter 8 and it was just $36. If I didn't get it, I wouldn't have lost any sleep. However, I just wanted to let others know my experience because someone else might have needed that lens sooner than I did. I'm not overly pissed off by the situation, I just thought I'd warn others. Perhaps "avoid" was too harsh of a word for the title. I probably should have used "warning" and let the readers decide on their own whether to purchase anything from Keith, because as you said, I did get the lens and I did not lose anything.

BTW, I hope my post doesn't sound overly defensive towards you, I just needed to clarify the point of my post. 🙂

Hi,
I have used Rocky on a large number of occasions. All of my parcels have been posted within a day or 2 of payment. His descriptions and emails are a little terse but he is now listing about a 1000 items a week! Despite this, on the odd occasion there has been a problem, I have received a very quick response (usually within an hour or so) and he has always been more than fair in dealing with the matter quite often providing a full refund or replacement without question. I do know that around that time, he did have problems with Royal Mail. He had to resend one of my parcels when it was returned and another was lost. I don't have any connection with him other than being a satified customer and he is one of the few dealers on Scambay that I would trust.

I've always bypassed this seller because (a) I can't stand reading descriptions in ALL-CAPS, and (b) I'm put off by the "opt mint-" type rating system he uses. Scan down his list of items, and everything is either "opt mint-" or not graded. If a lens looks like its been run over by a herd of wilderbeast before plunging down Victoria Falls into the open mouth of a waiting hippo, and passed through to the other end, he'll still describe it as Opt Mint- if the glass itself is undamaged.... because in his book, it is still "optically mint". Fair enough, I guess... but he just doesn't present himself as my kind of seller.

However, feedback speaks volumes, and his feedback is very good, which is of paramount importance. British Royal Mail on the other hand has terrible feedback, and is the cause of many lost/delayed/stolen parcels.

Like Kim, I've bought lots of stuff (from cameras to lens caps) from Keith and I've never had any problems or unpleasant suprises with either the goods or speed of shipping. I always feel confident buying from hiim.

I had one experience with Keith and it was quite satisfactory. His photos aren't the best, but his description seems to be accurate. I take this as an advantage, since the item may be much better than it shows. If I am interested, I email him to confirm the condition. IIRC, shipping was relatively fast and well packaged. YMMV

Never got the two Contax cassetes I ordered from him. The communications was extremely lacking and he was lying on several occasions. Haven't got a refund. Some time after the sale he listed another couple of cassettes, although of course I can't prove they are the same.

Should've read this thread before dealing with him :/

9-13 I also have had several transactions with Rocky and all have been first rate, both service and item.Gotta remember most of his stuff is not new. He's a good communicator also.IMHO Robin

Well, over 60 days and the stuff was not here. If you look at his feedback - the unsatisfied customers part - it is fairly consistent: item shipped late or not delivered, poor communication. And always same-worded retaliatory feedback on his side, even for neutral ratings.

I won't buy from this seller because of his lack of a good description. He uses almost the same exact description on every auction.

I've bought some stuff from him. Most of the things he sells are in average to poor physical condition. Lately, the quality of his items seems to border on rusty.

Yeah, he's the guy who apparently couldn't take a sharp photo if he tried. And I certainly don't think he tries.

I would say he puts ZERO effort into his listings. I figure if someone is that lazy, then I'm not going to put much stock into the accuracy of his descriptions.

I generally expect the worst, and I won't bid high either.
