Does anyone have an opinion on the portfolio and single image contests offered by the B&W magazine (based is USA)? For real or scam-like? Contests have entry fees. Thanks.
No scam, the real deal. One of my images was selected for publication a few years back. Actually took the "silver" in the portait category. No entry fees, back then, not sure about now.
Why do you consider this a possible scam? Just because there is an entry fee does not make it a scam!
It's an oportunity to get your work out and be seen in a magazine instead of a monitor and i don't think the fees are out of line.
Jan, I only mentioned the word "scam" because I have seen posts on other sites that are very skeptical of contests that include entry fees. I myself have had a couple images selected by B&W magazine, but started to wonder about the significance of that after seeing what some other folks said. I think they were hinting at a "vanity publishing" type situaion. --Phil
It's not a scam. They printed one of my photos in the Single Image Contest a few years ago. They did send me an email asking if I'd like to buy additional copies of that issue to show and amaze my friends, but I wouldn't consider that a scam 😉
For some the entry fee might be to expensive but then it is not a hidden fee. Photographers are free to deside if it is to costly to get exposure in a magazine if selected.
I am not aware of any other magazines that have similar contests and with a free entry fee but would be curious to know about them if there are any.
They're a very legitimate publication, that I've read and admired for years. I had a photograph published in the Single Image Contest in the most recent round published.
Entry fees are pretty common now. I wish they didn't exist but in this case I felt it was a small price to pay in order to get my work out to a much, much wider audience.
