b+w uv ir cut filters

Hi guys, was just looking at the uv ir cut filters from b+w. I noticed that for any 486 filter, there seems to be digital pro version and a normal version. I assume m8 should utilise the dig pro one and the other version is for film?

in one of the german online shops i use for b&w filters, there are black regular and slim mounts, and sometimes silver regular, all MRC coated. which combination is available seems to depend on the filter size.

these are the two filters I'm, talking about. Do both of them work on M8? And are there cheaper alternatives to IR cut filters?

Look for them on Ebay, and used here in the classifieds. I've been finding them for $40~$50. Also look for MArumi, and Tiffen. Tiffen brought out a line of "Hot Mirror" filters for use on the Kodak DCS cameras in the early 90s. I've been using some made for the DCS200.

In case you're looking for one in 62mm filter size, I got one on sale in the Classifieds, can be used on smaller or larger diameters by means of a step up/down ring

Tiffen has two tiers of filters. The Hot Mirror Filter was a professional grade filter. Unless you have used one, and can show a degrade in performance, don't knock it.

Standing by to look at a direct comparison of images with the B&W vs the Tiffen filter. I've been using Leica, B&W, and Tiffen on my M8 with various lenses. Have not used a Marumi. I'm up to 8 IR blocking filters, not counting some of the odd ones made for optical power meters. I'll be adapting those for the small diameter lenses. Those are surplus, used to be expensive. Should be interesting.

I have two B+W filters (one is the silver Dig PRO and the other is a regular one), they are both feel and look of a better quality than the Leica 'made' ones (I have three of those). Personally, I would buy the B+W filters anytime, they are very high quality and less expensive than the Leica UV/IR filters.
I think that the dig PRO is just some product line designation and not a higher quality over the other B+W you posted.

Don't bother with a slim version of any filter for a M8 or M8.2. With the 1.33x crop factor the edge of the lens projection never is seen by the sensor, as such, vignetting due to the use of one filter isn't an issue.

Even if one were to stack filters, such as using a ND in conjunction with a UV/IR Cut, I doubt that vignetting due to the frames of the filters would occur.

My understanding is that the F-Pro and Digital Pro filters are exactly the same, apart from the finish color (and maybe alloy composition) of the mounting ring. They decided to call the silver ones "Digital Pro" because a lot of digital cameras have a silver finish these days. ("Not true", you say, concerning modern lenses for the M8 -- but the UV/IR filters are only a tiny percentage of the B+W offering in either mount designation.)

Yes, that's correct, except I have different sizes (DIG Pro is 46mm, and the MRC is 52mm).

Are these filter have any impact on the camera's exposure ?
For example: a snapshot is taken with out the filter with a 250 speed and f8.
If the same picture is taken with the b&w filter it will need a 125 and f8 ? Or the impact of the filter is minor?

The impact of the filter is minor. It cuts UV and IR light, which the CCD sensor is more likely to pick up than the camera's meter.
