Hard to pick a favorite. I did like the one of the deli, just to think of visiting the place.

Number 4 (the profile shot on the train platform) was taken with my Olympus 35 RC. Used a yellow filter, 1/125, f8, Tri-X EI 1250.

The last (Chrysler building) was taken with my Yashica Lynx 14. 1/125 @ f11, Efke KB 100 (as I recall).

Bill, the photos are wonderful. Thanks for the tips about the codes. I rode from San Diego to NO back in the early 70's and it was a hoot but I went coach(ouch military pay) and will get a sleeper next time.

H570 is the hot code right now - 25% off all fares! There are others that are even better, but with restrictions, like two passengers, etc. Just have to search around, they're out there!

And the sleeper is the way to go with the overnight trips. So cool to travel that way if you have the time.

I will be using a week or more. Since I run my own studio.wedding business I will not schedule anything that week I am thinking of going the middle of next month or the end depending on the hotel booking. I want to stay three nights in DC and two in chicago. I might take a side trip to Va. while there. I have a niece that lives in Va. very close to DC and she wants me to stay with her. I coyuld possibly get away with only having to hotel it in Chicago

Just remember - it is not that unusual for Amtrak to run late - very late. Trains hit cars - idiot drivers try to beat crossings and someone gets blown away nearly every day somewhere in the USA (little-known news factoid) by being hit by a train. The police have to do their report, and the train sits until they do. Also, in some parts of the country, Amtrak does not own their track and they have to wait if the freight line says they have to wait. You have to relax and plan for this to happen. The trains are usually either very much on time - or WAY late. My trip to NYC was 7 hours late; for a nine-hour trip. Could have driven it if I had known. Coming back - right on time.

However - for the person who can deal with this - life is good. And you can generally use your cell phone (and even charge it) on the train, depending on where you are; so you can call and change hotel reservations, etc.

My last long-haul via Amtrak was early 1990, on the Lake Shore Limited (nicknamed by rail vets the "Late Sure Limited") out of Grand Central (when they still ran out from there) to Ann Arbor, MI with a former girlfriend. Took a camera or two, of course. A funky ride which you can either love or hate (I loved it, even sleeping overnight in Coach). Thinking about catching an Acela to DC sometime this year. Nothing in travel like it, and if it dies, it'll be a damn shame.

Thanks, Barrett (and to all) for the kind words. I don't think you'll see much more out of the ten rolls I shot - this is the best I have, but I'll pick through the dross and see if I missed anything. Really, a dozen or so good shots for ten rolls of film is about right for me - I do wish it could be more, but I ain't that good (yet).

As to trains - there will be more trips, more photos from out-of-town, and so on. I think everbody who lives in or visits North America ought to try an Amtrak trip once or twice - it is an experience not to be missed - even if you end up not caring to repeat it! And for non US-citizens, Amtrak has a great deal on a Europass-like equivalent that only non-citizens can get - a great deal, wish I could partake.

I love the train - but I guess it shows, huh?
