Oh, joy. The last week or so has been crappy for my gear.
Several disapointments almost all at once.
First, I screwed up my very nice Zorki 3m by trying to change the shutter speed before I advanced the film.(unintentionally--I thought the camera was wound on but it wasn't).
Second, I noticed that the right hand(looking from the back of the camera) strap lug on my Kiev 4a is very loose.
Third, the screw holding the advance lever on my "new" FED Micron2 camera loosened up to the point that it came off.
Fourth, at least I'm getting taller! According to my recently arrived Jupiter 9 lens, it's 2 meters from my eye to the floor! I'm amazed because I am only 5'8"(about 1.6? meters)!
:bang: :bang: :bang: :bang:
I have, until now anyway, been pretty lucky at the russian roulette of the FSU gear and it's only a hobby so I know its not the end of the world but[insert yer favorite curse here]!!!!
OK, on to remedies:
1)I was planning on sending the Z3(and another one that I bought intending to rebuild myself but have changed my mind about) to Oleg anyway for a general CLA-I figured that the camera could celebrate it's 50th B-day at the health spa. So the cameras are leaving this week. The up side is that I will have TWO handsome and working cameras when Oleg is done with them :) The down side is that I probably won't have them back by the NYC meet :(
2)I have taken the neck strap off of the Kiev and for now I will carry it around in its case. Does anyone know how the strap lug are attatched to the Kiev 4a? How far does the camera nedd to be disassembled to get to them? Or am I better off sending the dern thing overseas?
3) I took the Micron2 to my local jeweler as I didn't jave the correct type of screw driver (the head is not slotted but has two holes) and I didn't want to scratch the screw or the top cover of the camera by improvising(OK, the set of dividers I own didn't have fine enough points). Two minutes later he hands me back the camera and says"Well I tightened it up but I can't promise it won't loosen up again" Good enough for now. If it works loose I figure a small amount of loc-tite and I'm done.
4)Apparently the J-9 has been taken apart and reassembled incorrectly. I haven't got film back yet so is it possible that the focusscale but not the actual focus is wrong?
I have seen the Kiev Survival site instructions about the Kiev mount J-9(J-9 dismanlte and relube) How similar are these lenses apart from the lens mount? Do any of you fine people know of a similar page/site specifically about the LTM J-9?
I could send the J-9 back to the guy I bought it from but it would cost me almost as much in postage as I paid for the lens and I might not be any happier with the "new" one. And the glass on this one looks very good.
Thanks for letting me vent a bit here. Nobody in my family, nor any of my friends could give a rat's a-- about this stuff(though lots of them have asked for pictures to hang on their walls). And I know my toys will be OK and I will be having fun with it again soon enough.
Sigh....I guess I'll just have to settle for using the FED5 for a while. And the apparently never used J-12 for a while. Damn.
(while playing something Wagnerian in the background):
AS BARNACK IS MY WITNESS,I WILL BE A PHOTO-GEEK AGAIN!!
Got that out of my system. Thanks all!
Rob

You might try just firing the shutter a few time on the 3M (setting the speed AFTER cocking). Sometimes they will work their way out of the funk--sort of like rebooting a computer to make it run right.

The J-9 may have been reassempled wrong. There's only one proper way and an infinate number of wrong ways to do it. That's one of the biggest problems with J9s. The grease in them tends to dry out and tighten them up more than other lenses, people try to relube them and don't get them back together properly

I recently cleared a jam on a Zorki-4 that a previous owner had done the same thing to. I used a dental pick to relocated/realign the gears. They are very accessible once the top is removed.

However, a Zorki-3M is a more valuable camera than a Zorki-4. If it were mine I would have someone knowledgable and trustworthy, like Oleg, to fix it.
