Hi,

I'm not always keen on carting my Rollei around in the leather case, and it's not really very user-friendly when it comes to changing film, etc.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good small padded bag that'd take the Rollei plus maybe a light meter and a couple of rolls of film. I already have larger bags that take an SLR plus several lenses, but they are tad large for a single TLR plus a small meter and film.

Any ideas? Something from Crumpler? Others?

thanks

Matt

The Domke F5-XB (I think that's the model) would be ideal IMO!

Here's mine with my Bronica RF645 and an extra lens in it ... the TLR would take up about the same amount of area as the RF leaving the space on the left for extras. I'm really impressed with the quality of this Domke!

I use the Artisan & Artist Evans Walker bag. Enough room for the camera, film, filters, hood, notebook and pen etc but small and unobtrusive. Well padded too.

I am trying the Zing extra large lens pouch when the Rollei comes back from its CLA. Just as a camera skin, to carry on my shoulder hanging from/on a 1.5' Domke gripper with swivels.

I shall let you know how the Rollei fits inside and how good the overall set-up is. But it will be a while.

Ok, Harry Fleenor worked well on my new-old Rolleiflex 2.8f. It is back and I am very happy with the Extra Large Zing Pouch, the one that is pictured by Zing with a Hasselblad moving in ..

The camera fits well with the metal hood etc on; there is room for a layer of 120 films (4) and a small light meter (the camera 50 year old selenium cells are useless, erratic, near dead ..).

I house my spare carry around film inside a pair of 135 film cans [cut out bottom of one cleanly (carpet cutter type utility knife), make sure the inner edge is smoth (file protrusions away ..), then push the bottomless one into the top of a complete 135 cannister (both black!), keep pushing down until the inside cylinder has the right size for a 120 film spool with film; seal junction with electric black tape on the outside (2 loops), insert new film, close top : done]
I put one layer of padding from an unused bag in between bottom layer of spare film rolls and camera.

Finally I used a Lowepro belt to put through the loops on the Zing and I carry the bagged camera with film, meter, .. on my hip for easy access and bump protection ...

The strap I use is a Domke Gripper, 1 1/2 inch wide. I cut off the corners of the end of it (45 degree angles, just for rounding the strap end for easier use), burn the ends on a candle so not to fray, file the hard thick edges (after the burn) down to be as slim as the strap web and put a needle and thread through near the end to let me pull the straps through the metal attachement loops of the camera body(the very front gap there works best for aneven balance).
All this works very well. 1/2 hour; done forever.

But the Domkes need to be reverse threaded at the very end! There are 2 little rectangular plastic 'ring' pieces with the strap. I rethread the 'sharpened, rounded' very end of the strap back into the middle of the very last of these 'loops', pull hard to make it jam that loop and the strap does not slip any longer.

I did that on my other D Gripper on the Contax, too, because I had noticed that eventually the strap end becomes shorter and shorter ... as if it wants to slip out of its hold ...

Anyway, this is what I am happy with for the Rollei 2.8f.

I saw someone using a velvet bag off of a bottle of Crown Royal scotch. I liked the idea. If you drink scotch you might give it a try. At least you have the scotch to drink.

I ended up buying a small Crumpler bag -- the MuffinTop 3000 -- which is a very nice fit: takes the Rollei, a couple of filters and some film with just enough room left over for a mobile phone. It's about the same size as the Domke recommended above.

Wow, the Billingham Hadley digital that was repeatedly suggested here is (for me):

way too big (15 by 12 by 17 cm), way too heavy (well over 1 pound) and way too expensive (at $199 about 12 times the price of the extra large Zing), and it has no belt/distributing weight carrying ability.

It would hurt on many fronts if I were use this one, the spine being the most vital ...

It looks like a lady's handbag and shouts "I have camera."

I'm using a Nova Micro from Lowepro, it is the right size for my 'flex, plus a meter (or some filters and Rolleinar) and some rolls (fit in the mesh pockets outside of the bag).

Can recommend a Lowepro 5s Lenscase, think I have posted about it before here somewhere, but can´t find it :)

Fits my Planar F, a microfiber cloth, a few rolls of film and a hood, space for a meter too if you want to.
Use a lowepro strap that came with one of my other bags since i upgraded one of them with the deluxe strap, that one would work perfectly too, but maybe a bit of overkill?

Edit : found the link, hope it works,

Domke F-803 fits my 2.8E perfectly with plenty of room to spare. Great bag really, you can also fit a small rangefinder in there with the Rolleiflex.

Here's a link to the one I have. It's the best link I could find. Bought it in Germany... doesn't seem to be that big in the US as I can't find it at any of the online shops... in the US.
Kalahari Orapa K-21. Paid about $99 US for it. I've carried every camera I have in it at one time or another- Hasselblad, Nikons, Rollei (TLR & SLR), Leica.... right now my Graflex Crown Graphic and 5 film holders are in it. Great bag.
