I am about to go out and buy a single strap bag - like a courier bag - but large enough for a laptop and my RF645.

Here is my first choice :

Kata bags/backpacks come to mind when I think about biking with a camera. Some have laptop compartments.

Consider the KATA bags suggested above - if you're carrying laptops and gear on your back while riding, stability is very important. The KATA Rucksacks are extremely comfortable and the straps would cinch it to you nicely.

They're also pretty tough on the exterior which is good in case you and your stuff take a tumble.

After a lot of checking out courier-style single strap bags from various makers including Timbuk2, Ortlieb, Chrome, Crumpler, KATA and Courierware, I got myself a Bagjack technical support bag for my laptop and cameras. Very durable, highly customizable, roomy enough, unfortunately rather expensive.

The laptop messenger bags by Timbuk2 are very nice. Over the years I have used the medium and small-sized (non-laptop) messenger bags both for bike commuting and as photo bags. I appreciate that the Timbuk2 bags are fully waterproof and do not use zippers.

Most of my cycling friends opt for Timbuk2 or Chrome bags. The REI gear that I have usd (mostly kayak stuff and outdoor clothing) has also been of reasonably good quality.

I have an eastpak small backpack which is padded on the bottom, and has a special laptop compartment that is padded on all sides.
It's quite good. And resistant - in 3 years of everyday use, including use for shopping, for hiking, in rain, snow and hot weather, it's still all fine.

Regardless of the bag you choose, keep a supply of ziplock bags sized for your stuff tucked away in the bag. Ziplock has a line of really large bags out. I've found them in the sporting goods section of Wal-Mart near the sleeping bags. For those times when it is really wet outside.

I second the TimBuk2 bags. I have a medium courier bag that I love. Fully waterproof but not padded; I know they have padded bags, though.

I have a 235 Courier from BaileyWorks and like it a lot. Very tough & waterproof, but not padded. Great balance on the bike. Has several compartments, including two velcro'd pockets that can each fit a Rollei 35, in its case.
