I want a bag that opens on top with a zipper like the Artist and Artisan Evans Walker, or a little bigger. Not a messenger type. No flaps, little or no velcro. Slim, for 2 bodies each with a lens, plus a little room for film and doodads. I'll get the A&A if I can't find a similar design for less money. $100 or so would be nice.

Many years back Tenba built a bag for Polaroid for their spectra camera. Take a look around and see if you can find one. The exact size and design you are looking for.

The Thinktank Urban Disguise series have zipper top openings. However, the smaller ones do have a front flap. I have the UD 30 - great bag.
 
The National Geographic NG 2475 or the 2345 (a bit smaller) might be interesting for you... looks a bit like a messenger bag though and it has a flap but you can fold it back which is what I do.

Holds my C330 with both lens, Canon P with 15mm attached, Bessa R4A with 28mm atttached plus my CV 40mm and 21mm, plus all my film and my meter in the front pockets.

Goffer, nice bag, thanks for posting those photos. And yes Bill, I do remember that Tenba/Polaroid bag. I had one, it died of old age and mold. Think Tank looks too deep?

I bought my first A&A bag half a year ago in Hong Kong and love these bags since then!
Impeccable quality, strong materials and just the perfect size.
I use a "Oscar's Daybag" (so all, you do not want with flap and velcro).
The discounted one above has no flap and velcro, but excellent zippers and is close to your budget after discount.

If I would not have a wardrobe full of bags already, I would grab it.

Btw - I don't like the inlays from the A&A bag much. Next to the same bad quality of stitching of these inlays as any cheap 12 USD inlay, they are designed "bottomless", while the padding in the bag always moves around this way.
I suggest, to fix this with additional stitching, velcro or just swapping to better inlays.
 
Tried so many over the years and only *1* has fulfilled my requirements and I wouldn't swap it for anything. (I'm assuming you are talking 2 RF bodies with lenses here)

Zip top, ballistic nylon, handy side pockets, removable inner padded compartment, can be made 1/3 bigger by simply pulling a zip, light, discreet & well balanced. Superb for street photography!

I usually carry an M8 + 28mm & M6 + 50mm within the 2 spaces in the compartment and the back of the bag is great to put in whatever you need ... Kindle, film, a couple more lenses, whatever you need. I've even carried the above plus a Nikon D2X & 50mm with the extra space unzipped.

I usually dislike LowePro stuff intensely and was highly sceptical until my local dealer managed to get one in for me to try. Took me all of 20 seconds to know 101% this was the bag I would have made myself given the chance and had looked and craved for years. YMMV of course but for me it's perfect. :)

Jeremy, I thought about that surgery, but how to finish the edge neatly, gets complicated?
