So I have all my nice lenses in the above named containers.
However when taking them out to actually do some photography I find that they are not necessarily the most accomodating of items.
What do other people put their lenses in , inside their camera bag ? Or do they just put them in with no protection ? (I do this with all my SLR lenses, but for some reason I seem to feel that the Kievs need more loving care and attention)
Gratefull for any useful comments (well any comments actually)
thanks

If you have both caps on, I think it's OK to put them into a bag without the container.

I have caps for most of my SLR lenses, but front and rear caps for both my LTM & Kiev/Contax lenses are harder to come by, and I don't have bakelite containers for all my lenses either. So if I'm out shooting, I use a few dollar store microfibre cloths as lense wraps.

I only use the container for the bulb-ended J-12.
Foe other lenses - both caps and a soft wrap.

My elderly mother sews so I had her make a few small drawstring pouches out of an old flannel shirt. Works pretty well............

The other thing about the bakelite boxes--they rattle in my bag. A minor annoyance except the lenses are bouncing around inside 'em. And in the boxes take up a lot of room.
I've been looking for some neoprene pouches. The ones in the last "local" camera store(next town over actually) are too big so no luck yet.

My mother knits and she has knitten little sock-like pouches for my lenses (comparable with the apple ipod socks, if you know those)

I almost never object to "nekkid" but in this instance I think clothed is better.backalley photo said:nekkid, in the bag with hood and end cap.

Joris, I really like the sock idea! My mom knits like a feind--she even tried to teach me many years ago but I was horrible at it--in fact, my winter hat was a gift from her several years ago. I think I know what I'm asking for for an early xmas gift!

what's wrong with nekkid?
why use a camera bag if we put things in a bag inside a bag.
i'd be too tired to photograph after retrieving a lens and socking another...

Nothing ever, joe, but the bag I'm using now doesn't have dividers so stuff in there can bounce against each other--not some thing I'm happy with.backalley photo said:what's wrong with nekkid?

I do need to find a better bag but that means traveling and that's going to be problematical for me for a while
Rob.

Since lenses for kiev are so small, I can carry a full set of lenses in a bag in bakelite cases that have soft foam wraps for the case and cap to take up the space inside as cushion. Thus, the lenses do not bounce inside the case.

I too have padded out the inside of the bakelite containers - but I still don't like lugging them around
Perhaps I'll try the socks !
Thanks for all the response

Have you tried looking at local grocery or Walmart/Target/whatever for the neoprene drink cooler/holder thingies? Chances are, the local radio station is probably giving them away for free.

I have a bakelite container for Helios-103, it is padded with soft foam but has one problem: it is *huge*. At least twice more in volume than the lens itself. And as I sometimes lug lenses around in a jacket it quickly gets inconvenient.
But now I persuaded my wife to knit some lens pouches as well. Great idea DaveP, thanks!

Nekid, usually. Without dividers, but with padding, in my generic small backpack. But if i know I will shake them alot, i put them in small leather/cardboard boxes/cylinders. Some time ago all the lenses came in those things, apparently. Lots of my second-hand lenses came in those!
The bakelite container f my jupi-9 is functional but noisy and heavy.

What do you people have against camera bags with dividers???? Yes, maybe they are a little more bulky, but that's where all my SLR lenses stay. (With lens caps on BOTH ends.)
At the present time all the lenses I have for my FSU RF's are the 50mm lenses they came with. In time I'll probably get some accessory lenses, but that also means viewfinders.
BTW, not a few Leitz lenses came with those bakelite cases, too.

I have nothing against dividers. I just don't have a proper camera bag. I either carry a camera on my shoulder or in the backpack over my shoulder

I only ever use my camera bags with dividers when travelling or for transport. Once I get to where I need to be, the bag either stays in the car/hotel/room and the lenses I want go into a backpack, fanny sack/waist pouch or my pockets.
I also find that some SLR lenses I have take up about as much room as my entire RF kit (any, whether FSU LTM or Leica LTM or Kiev), so I don't really need a big bag for my RF kits like I would for the SLR's.
