Balda Baldix SV Shutter Transplant: What's Involved?

Hello all,

I was given a Balda Baldix 6x6 folder with a Baltar f2.9 lens the other week: bellows intact, reasonably good nick apart from one thing... The circular pot-metal case housing the shutter mechanism is broken. It looks like the protruding flash socket has been dinged and ripped it front to back. All shutter functionality is there, however.

How feasible would it be to transfer the shutter mechanism and lens barrel into a new case, assuming I can pick up a scrapper? Is all the shutter mechanism mounted on a back plate that will lift out, or is it a complete shutter strip-down job?

I'm asking this before I dive in there. 🙂

I don't know about a new case, but I have put lenses into a reworked Pronto and Pronto SV shutter. You have to remove the entire mechanism from the bellows front. You might try that and see if the case is removable without having to delve into the shutter mechanism. I bought my shutters rebuilt from Certo SIX.

Also, you will have to adjust the focus with replacement of the lens.

Thanks for all that, John. I've pretty-much answered my own question as I looked on Hans Kerensky's Flickr pages where he does a CLA on a Franka Solida with a Prontor SV shutter. Glad I looked as he advises removing the case upwards so the shutter blades don't fall out!

I've collimated the lens on one of my Baldixes before to good effect - just using a piece of ground glass and a target in the garden. I was going to keep the same lens and shims and see how I went from there.

It must have had a hell of a bash to crack the case and bend the flash socket!
