Just read a thread on Photo.net about Target stores blowing out Kodak Gold and 400UC film really cheaply. I have no idea if it is true, but there are confirmations posted as well:

Photo.net film price thread

I will be going to Goldsboro tonight for my photography club meeting and I'll try to swing by Target first - there is no Target in Wilson. I'll post if the rumor is true or untrue. But in the meantime...FYI.

I checked my local Target during my lunch hour.. they don't have any Kodak Gold, but they did have some 'clearance' 400UC film for under $2 a roll.. forgot to check out the expiration date

Brett,

Thanks for the info - I'll do my best to check tonight and I'll get the expiration date if I can. At the rate I go through film, I'm not sure I'd care if the price is right. Hard to believe that 400UC would be nearly expired, though. They just released it for general consumer sales what, less than a year ago? Surpassing strange...

Joe,
The "UC" is supposed to relate to "Ultra Color", so I guess a 400asa version of Fuji's Reala? I haven't tried any yet, just what I've read about it.
I'll drop by Target here tomorrow and check.

I've never used it.. what would it compare to?

It's a very saturated color print film - bright colors. The UC stands for "Ultra Color." Sort of a print film version of slide film Fuji Velvia.

It used to be part of the "Portra" line of professional films - NC, VC, and UC. NC is the 'wedding film' and VC is for 'Vivid Color' and UC well you know.

A year (?) or so ago, Kodak decided to start selling Portra 400UC as Ultra 400UC. You can still buy Ultra 100 UC at B&H, etc, still a 'pro' film.

I like Ultra 400UC for the same kinds of things I'd normally use Velvia for - flowers 'n stuff. But the bonus is I can get it developed in an hour - no such thing out here in the sticks where I live for slide film. More like 3 weeks.

It's a good 'spring colors' film. Not 'terrible' with skin tones, like Fuji Superia 400 XTRA is (much as I like it otherwise). I think of it as Kodak Gold 200 with punched up colors.

My wife came home this weekend with a 24 exposure roll of BWC (the chromogenic b&w film) that was on the half off/half off table at Target. It has an expiration date of 03/2006, and cost around $2.

I like Portra 400UC. Here's a sample...

Now I just have to find a Target nearby.

I've started shooting a 200 speed Polaroid print film, 24 exp. from WalMart for 97 cents. Not bad film.

I really like the Kodak UC film. I went out bought a bunch. I got a sample via Kodak Professionall and was impressed -- I was even more impressed when I saw it for cheap at Target. Very fine grain, saturated colors.

I also like the Polaroid High Definition print film from WalMart -- it's actually AGFA film for those that care. At 400 it's a little grainy, but not bad for budget film. Cheap enough to not care about how much gets burned, good enough quality not to complain.

a closer inspection at my Target showed the 400UC expiration is 08/2006.. priced 5.98 for a 3-pack

Yes, I just got home, that was my experience as well. The packs are factory-marked with a price of $10.95 per 3-pack (36 exposure), and the Target employee did NOT want to scan the thing for me and tell me the price - he argued with me and told me it was priced as marked. I finally persuaded him to scan one and he muttered - "Yeah, it's $5.95 all right." Then he stomped off. Really.

I didn't care, I gathered ALL the 400 UC together in a big pile and carried it to the front and paid. $2 per roll for Kodak 400 UC 36-exposure - there is no more left in Goldsboro, NC tonight.

As you said, expiration date appears to be 08/2006. Plenty of time.

So just FYI folks. If you like 400UC, give this a try. If you haven't tried it, that's a great price to give it a shot.

Brian,

I haven't found that film at Walmart. I did find ONE roll of banged-up 12 exposure Polaroid 200 for 97 cents, but just the one. The 24 exposure was cheap, but not that cheap. At the price I just paid for the 400 UC, though, that's gotta be the winner on this round.

I did try a 4-pack of Polaroid 200 - didn't scan too well. But it could well have been me - I'll try it again soon.

for the record, the local neighborhood Target up the street in Denver does not even stock Kodak 400 UC.

i will be heading over to the "Super Target" across town in the next day or two and see what they have.

if they have the film, it really is too good of a deal to pass up. i really like the film, and i shoot it in my Canonet GIII and my Lomo LC-A all the time.

Bill,
Our Target in Washington State doesn't carry Kodak UC at all and no Kodak film on sale either.
BUT, they did have Fuji Xtra-Superia 400 (3 rolls 24 ex. and one of 36 ex.) for $7.49 , PLUS an instant $1 off at the check out.
$6.49 is great for 4 rolls of great Fuji film! ~ ; - )

Off target a little bit with this, but this thread got me curious and I checked our Superstore. I found that they had their 5 packs of Fuji Superia X-tra 24 exp. on for $9.20 CAD and it seems like the regular price, which is about $7.40 USD. The kicker is that there are bonus packs with 2 exta 24 exp. rolls at the same price. Also the 200/400/800 asa all appear to be the same price. The deals were not as good at our Walmart store. Nice to see that Canadian prices can be in the ballpark.

I picked up some of the C-41 black-and-white last week at the Target near my house. I should probably go back and get the rest, most of it had an expiration date of 1/2006. Maybe I'll grab a couple of Kodak UC while I'm at it, although I'm not fond of color print film.

Thanks for the alert, Bill. Picked up a dozen rolls of the 400 UC at the local Target,
same deal, $5.98 for 3, exp. 08/2006.

I'm going to have to go back and check out the other film, but it will be a pain, since it isn't marked with the correct price and the clerk is a jerk about scanning it for me. But I guess worth it if the price is right.

I read on Target's website that they are severing their relationship with Kodak for their web-based photo processing, so maybe that's why they're blowing out Kodak film? No idea.

Best Regards,
