Base plate with cutout a good idea?

Since the M8.2 that I bought a while ago only came with a grip and no base plate, I have been looking for a second-hand base plate. I came across this one on ebay:

Is it a good idea to have a cutout in the base plate or will dust and dirt get inside the camera?

As the M8 is reasonably tough in terms of being able to use it in light rain (using common sense) it seems a shame that somebody buggered up a perfectly good baseplate to make it leak. Taking the battery out is something achieved in a couple of seconds anyway. On ebay the camera strap guru Luigi does market a replacement baseplate with proper doors for battery and card removal and one of those may be better, a 'Luigi baseplate' search brings up results.
