I scored a clean-looking FED 3 that is seems to be afflicted with the disease that eats screws. Lots of the screws on it are missing and while I have been able to borrow some from other basketcases (is this the sign of a true FSU aficionado, trays of gutted FEDs and Zorkis scattered about?), I wonder if there are bits missing that aren't as obvious.

Does anyone have or know of any good clean detail shots of working FEDs that might illuminate me here?

Frinstance, it looks like the rewind spool (not the take up spool) is missing a pair of screws at the top that hold it on the shutter release rod. The shutter spring and it's screws were missing but I replaced them easily enough. The lens mount has been cannibalized, with one of the mounting plates (where those screws are fastened) gone. I'm wondering how interchangeable the shutter crates are, as I could just swap a working crate from a 4 into it and save some aggravation.

I like the idea in another thread of getting a bulk lot of carcasses and stripping them to fix the ones I want to get working again. Anyone have any FED leftovers they want rid of? Maybe we could start a floating collection: when it comes to you, you take out the parts you need, drop in the stuff you can't use, and send it on ;-)

There are plenty of sites on the web with detail pictures of the outsides of the various FSUs and the "show off your FSU" thread will yield a few more.

As regards interchanging things like shutter crates, my experience suggests that if two models look similar (like, say, the FED 4 and 5) they are likely to have a lot in common internally. If they look different (like a FED 3a and 3b) they probably have little in common. The russians didn't do themselves any favours here, many parts that could have been common to different models are very different and totally non-interchangeable.

Not really looking for the outside view: it's the inside where things seem to have gone pear-shaped. Missing screws, missing parts, and blind ignorance: a heady brew.

Looks like I am missing a connection between the winder and the shutter drum. The restrictor gear and it's correct placement is where I seem to be stuck. Has anyone done a CLA on the FEDs like yours on the Zorki 4?
