i put in a dead epson battery earlier this evening and just now went to check on it. the red light was flashing. normally at the end of a charge the light is out.
i'm guessing this might indicate the battery is shot?

First of all, check your charger with a voltmeter.
If the battery was hot, it seems to be a short circuit and the battery is dead. (Maybe you can send it back to get another one.)
If not, clean contact points of both battery and charger with q-tips dipped in rubbing alcohol.
I´ve had a lot of dead AAs and AAAs, but not only one OEM-battery.
