Battery for my R-D1s

Hi all,

I am looking to buy a new battery for my camera, since I found out that 1 battery is simply not enough for a full day's shooting session.
I saw on ebay some batteries, which are not original Epson, but are the same model.
Does anyone here has some experience with batteries, what would you recommened, buying an Epson battery, or a different one, and if so, what should I pay attention to?

I bought third party batteries a few years ago. They worked just as well as the original Epson battery. I have no idea if they are the same make as the one you are contemplating, though. Since Epson is reintroducing the R-D1 in a new "X" model this year, you should be able to buy Epson-branded batteries soon.

I've had some small trouble with the 3rd Party 3.7v 1300mAh batteries in cold weather. Like the shutter not firing after the first shot.

The 1500 mAh ones work fine.

I have a friend who claimed to be able to revive a 'dead' battery. He said inside the battery, there is another core battery which can be re & re. I do not know how and dare not mess with them. So I sent him 2 dead ones for internal transplant. I'll see how it goes and report back. Stay tuned.

Are you talking about refilling?
If so, you may as well refill with some higher cap cell

If so, you may as well refill with some higher cap cell

That's right. My friend is doing it for me. He bought the refill cap cells while he was in Hong Kong. Cost him about HK$20- which is less than US$3- Will see if the refills he has fit the NP-80. Will keep you guys posted.

Hi,
It's a 3.6 volt battery, I'm not sure if it's powerful enough for the R-D1 as the standaard Epson battery is 3.7 volt. It might influence the light meter and other electro/mechanical parts like the shutter. Though I doubt it will damage the camera.

Has anyone else here tried one of these batteries? Looks like a cheap source if they work in the R-D1.

Just read up on batteries on Rich's R-D1 site:

Lastly, something to not worry about. Some Li ion batteries (including the Epson EU-85) are marked as 3.7 V, others as 3.6 V; however, all Li ion batteries produce the same voltage. This variation in voltage should thus be ignored: it arises simply from differences between how manufacturers define the average voltage.

In that case, go ahead, it should not cause any trouble. 1600mAh batteries should last you a little longer then the original Epson Batteries.

Not at all.
1x original Epson 1500mAh,
1x Replacement 1500mAh from my very old Digilux zoom,
2x Replacement 1800 mAh,
one for an afternoon, two for a day and four for a weekend,
all are working properly, no difference.

Hi, yesterday i was charging my 3 batteries, 1 epson original and 2 third party (if anyone wants to know the brand please send a pm)

Just after being completed, one of these got short circuited, little smoke, burnt varnish smell!
Thankfully it wasn´t in the camera!

So, you got a bad one 😡 I´m sorry.
For my person I´m using third party batteries, not the cheapest, for years and years, no probs. For cameras from Panasonic, Canon, Leica, Fuji, Sony, Nikon and Epson ... all were okay ... nearly ... one times one battery didn´t fit into the cam, it was to thick because of a label, so it went back. That was the only "bad" one.

I think the originals are only burning your money.

But everyone has to find out by oneself what for he is spending his money. Same discussion was on LeicaUserForum and even there they didn´t believe only in the ones with red dot.

Btw. what brand of AA´s or AAA´s are you using for mp3-players, remote-controls, flashlight ...? Only from the same manufactory like the device?

Just a note of caution: I have had no problem whatsoever with the 1200mAh Uniross battery I have used for years alongside my OEM Epson battery, but the cheap 1500mAh 'FLNP80' unit I bought earlier this year gives intermittent blank exposures as it reaches a low level of charge.

Others have suggested that certain no-namo batteries may have some kind of low-charge voltage drop characteristic that doesn't suit the R-D1's electronics…
