Still trying to See.
You make some good points.
May I ask where you boguth your batteries?

it is a UK site, but presumably they ship to the States. I have brought 4 of these (at different times) and they have all been as good as the Epsons. I have had friends who have had bad batteries that they brought from E-Bay. Quality from suppliers there seems more variable.

Epson discontinued the R-D1/1s some considerable time ago now. It is almost certain that they have not continued to have replacement batteries made for it. All Epson brand batteries will now probably be 18 months old at least (even if sold new). Lith-Ion batteries deteriorate whether used or not, unless carefully stored part charged and refrigerated. It is likely then that newer good third party batteries will be better than Epson ones.
I was at the shops in Tokyo 2 days ago and asked about the original batteries. The store keeper assured me that these batteries are still in production. So I ordered 4 and just collected it. Looks like the battery situation is not as bad as it seems. And more than one shop carries this type of battery.
The camera is also available in Japan both used and new (with full local warranty). I think they will be committed to supporting it for a while more.
Cheers,
