Bayonet screwmount adapter for M3

If you are patient and VERY lucky, you can sometimes get the Leitz adapters for less than $50. Or even $30.

If adapters seem expensive, have you priced M mount lenses lately? 😱

You want cheaper? Buy the $20 generics from China. When they don't work, buy the $55 ones from CameraQuest. What's wrong with that picture?

Follow the classifieds here. Adapters come up all the time.

Wayne is right, there aren't many options. You can try out the generic stuff if you want. There have been numerous discussions about the generic $20 adaptors you'll find on ebay. Here's the Cliff's notes: They're junk. Your best bet is the genuine Leitz versions or the Cosina version.

I was given a couple of the Chinese versions. They are currently residing in the local landfill. Neither brought up the frames they were supposed to.

I have a Cosina/Voigtlander 50/75 which does the trick as well as a couple of original Leitz versions.

Expensive means buying the wrong thing first and the right thing second.

Economical means buying the right thing first.

hmmm you could get the leitz brand -- $60-$120 on ebay...

hmmm a $700+ camera, hundreds of dollars in lenses and $55 is too expensive? I don't get it.

hehe 🙂 I got my Leica M3 body for 390$ ! I have several 50mm f2.0 lenses that cost me less than 35$ each. I also have a 50mm f1.5 lens that cost me about 60$. Considering those #s 55$ does not look that small 🙂 (to me it would be an adapter at the price of f1.5 lens!)

But I agree that seems like the most reasonable and safe choice.

I bought a Leitz 50mm adapter on Ebay for $26 a few months ago that I use with my M3. I also have a "Made in Japan" generic 90mm adaptor that brings up the correct frames, but is not as secure in the mount as the Leitz adaptor.

Do I understand it correctly that I need different adapters for different focal distances? I.e separate one for 50mm lens and another one for 90mm lens?

If yes, could you please recommend any adapter for 90mm lens?

Thanks

Ivan,
The only difference between the adapters is which frame lines are selected. On a Bessa, this doesn't matter as the lines are selected manually. On a ZI or Leica the lens will work as normal but the "wrong" lines may show. If you want the 90 lines to show on the M3, you need to use a 28/90 adapter of whichever make you wish. Some early ones may just be marked 90. The other pairings are 35/135 and 50/75.

Bayonet screwmount adapter for M3

This is what they look like...One's a Voigtlander...Another's a Leica/Leitz. Each says the lenses it will work with -- meaning that it will bring up the frame lines for the lenses engraved on the adapter...Of course, any Leica/Leitz or Voigtlander adapter will work but they won't bring up the correct frame line unless you get the correct adapter...But if you get, say, one of these, it will work with all of your LTM lenses...Adorama and Cameraquest , among others, sell them, as others have said...And as you have been advised, stick with the best and you won't regret it...

Bob, thanks for the pictures. Isn't Voightlander a german brand? Why do they make adapters in Japan?

Cosina in Japan have been licensing the rights to the name to put on their series of excellent rangefinder cameras, lenses, and accessories (as well as some SLR stuff).

Check out www.cameraquest.com and you'll find out LOTS of information.
